Why should I keep Security Essentials if it will no longer be supported.  How do I get rid of it and buy another security system.

Moved from XP to AV/AM Software - Hamluis.

No new versions will be coming out for XP but virus definitions will still be updated. If you wish to uninstall, use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

You should Download and save your new AV to the desktop. So you don't have to go on the web un protected.
Then uninstall MSE as mentioned above thru the Control Panel..
Install the new AV

If you want a free one I recommend Avira or Avast from here... L@@K

For paid I'd use
ESET NOD32, AV only or the Suite

Kaspersky Same option.

Actually, there is no need to remove MSE right away if you are satisfied with it.

Will Microsoft Security Essentials be supported after April 8, 2014?
Microsoft Security Essentials will not be available for download on Windows XP after April 8, 2014. If you already have Microsoft Security Essentials installed, you will continue to receive anti-malware signature updates through July 14, 2015. However, please note that PCs running Windows XP after April 8, 2014 should not be considered protected.
