My computer:
WinXP SP3 (build 2600.xpsp_sp3_qfe.130704-0421)
Chrome (Version 33.0.1750.154 m)
IE 8 (Version: 8.0.6001.18702)
FireFox (27.01)

What I am currently experiencing:
* In Firefox occasionally a tab opens trying to load a URL that I don't quite remember (search2.com? secure2.com? something like that) - it never loads.
* In Firefox (only!) I see mouseover or hover links (words on webpages that are blue and are links). Mousing over them offers a popup with some bogus ad and always at the bottom it says Ads by HighliteApp

What Started this:
I tried to install Minecraft Forge and didn't choose "custom" and my installer installed a toolbar and some software (I forget which ones now).

What I've done:
* Uninstalled "Optimizer Tools" via add/remove programs
* Uninstalled "Highlite App" via add/remove programs
* Uninstalled "Search Protect" from add/remove programs
* Downloaded (but not run Emsisoft AntiMalware (I did install it, just have not scanned with it yet)

I do have an old MalwareBytes installed. I launched it and says it's signatures are 402 days old - probably from the last time I was infected :( I have not updated it or scanned with it.

I would be hugely grateful for assistance cleaning my PC. I will not attempt any cleaning on my own but will wait for instructions (no reason to bumble around and make things worse in my ineptitude).

Thank you.
- Christian

  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices (do NOT change any settings here)
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Click Go and post the result.

p22002970.gif Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to your desktop.
NOTE. If you already have MBAM 2.0 installed scroll down.

  • Double-click mb3-setup-1878.1878-3.5.1.2522.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:

    • Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
    • A 14 day trial of the Premium features is pre-selected. You may deselect this if you wish, and it will not diminish the scanning and removal capabilities of the program.

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
Do NOT use spoilers.
Do NOT edit your reply to post additional logs. Create new reply. I'll not get any email notifications about edits so I won't know you posted something new.

I am not seeing how to attach files (which was the requested method for MBAR and MBAM logs). I see attachments in my account from my previous posts in 2011 and 2012, but I don't see how to add attachments now.

I'll search the forums for someone explaining this to a noob like me, sorry for the delay on those files.

p22002970.gif You're running two AV programs, MSE and Emisoft.

You must uninstall one of them.

p22002970.gif Your MBAM log says "No Action By User".

Re-run MBAM fix all issues and post new log.

p22002970.gif rKill log is missing.

p22002970.gif MiniToolbox log is incomplete. Redo.

I'm going to follow the new instructions. One question: The MBAM instructions said to take the default actions:

  • When the scan is complete, if there have been detections, click Apply Actions to allow MBAM to clean what was detected.

The default actions for the 6 detected registry keys were to not take action. I'll rerun it and change the action to clean the keys, which I assume is preferred.

I am now working on uninstalling one AV, rerunning MBAM, rerunning MiniToolBox. Rkill log attached.

Many thanks for the ongoing help!

  • I have uninstall Emisoft's AV.

  • I reran MBAM and it found 21 total problems, the default action on all 21 was "ignore once."

  • I quarantined all and rebooted.

  • I then ran MiniToolBox. Both logs are below.

  • Ran tempfilecleaner - it rebooted me without a prompt (no worries, just letting you know so you can update your text if you want to)

  • Ran Adwcleaner - log below

  • Ran Junkware removal - log below

  • Ran ESET online. There were 9 threats but I missed the place to export the log and so I failed to do so. My apologies. Should I rerun it?

If you didn't change any Eset settings and all 9 items have been removed then you're fine.

How is computer doing?

p22002970.gif Update Firefox to the current 28.0 version.

p22002970.gif 1. Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Alternate download: http://www.filehippo.com/search?q=java

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: If you're running 64-bit system make sure you install BOTH, 32-bit and 64-bit Java.

Note 3: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

2. Now, we need to remove old Java version and its remnants...

Download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it.

  • Run JavaRa.exe (Vista and 7 users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Do NOT post JavaRa log.

I have followed the latest steps. Firefox is updated and automatic updates has been enabled in it (that seems like a good idea to me). Java latest version is installed (the first installer you posted had no toolbars - it was java only). JavaRA has been run and java 1.5.x and 1.7.x have been removed.

NOTE: I ran the steps in the order you posted, and after JavaRA was done the control-panel item for Java is broken (states registry key is missing). I am reinstalling java now, but perhaps your instructions should be to run javaRA before installing latest java?

The computer seems better. I no longer see hover-over ads in my router's web interface or elsewhere (I was seeing them in this forum when I reported the problem). I have not surfed with FF much so I can't say for sure about the intermittent problem of extra tab opening, but I'll use it today for a while and update this thread if that is still happening.

Your computer is clean p3879546.jpg

1. This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download 51a5ce45263de-delfix.pngDelFix by Xplode to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:

  • Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
  • Remove disinfection tools
  • Create registry backup
  • Purge System Restore
  • Reset system settings

Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.

2. Make sure Windows Updates are current.

3. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Launch a quick scan now" link)

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC), AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) weekly ((you need to redownload these tools since they were removed by DelFix))

8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

10. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.
