Hello--

My video (Nvidia) drivers crashed last night killing my sound so I restarted, which usually fixed the problem as it happened a couple times before. Once restarted Windows installed an update. But after reaching the lock screen computer became extremely slow which has never happened before. Getting to the lock/pw screen took over a minute, when usually 1 click took me to the log in screen. Mouse moved fine but clicking anything took close to a minute to register. Tried logging in normally to see what would happen and it took over 25 mins just for the Metro start screen to fully load.. once loaded everything was proportionately as slow and practically frozen so had to hard reset. It seemed like anything would load if given the time but troubleshooting anything from a normal boot is impractical.

-Was able to get into Safe Mode after some time-- Malwarebytes (aprrox. 1 month update) & quick scan Windows Defender (4/1 update) found nothing.

-Tried disabling my video drivers and restarting normally but found the same problem occurred.

-No restore points are available.

-Window's Auto Repair was unable to fix, and was referred to WIndow's Troubleshoot.

-Window's Refresh does not work. (I have the retail Win8 Pro-- says to insert a installation disc or a recovery disc.. but says my (x64 Win8.0) installation disc is not recognized.)

-Safe Mode w/ Networking does not connect (red-x over network icon); however, it shows a connection on the lock screen when trying to start in normal mode.

I suspect it may be a virus? Maybe one that throttles cpu speed close to nill? I don't believe it's a hardware issue because Safe Mode runs perfectly fine outside of being unable to connect to the internet while in Safe Mode with Networking. (I've been in Safe Mode w/ Networking previously and have had no problems connecting wireless before though.) PC specs check out fine, no burned RAM or anything. Tried checking what Windows installed after initial reboot and found no update installed in the last day, which makes me suspect something malicious.

I would like not to have to re-install Windows and lose any files if it's possible but seems my options may be limited at this point. So I'd appreciate any help on how to fix this, or even whether I should move this to different forum. If you need more info I forgot to add please let me know.

And if it makes a difference, here's are my specs:

x64 Windows 8.1 Pro w/ MC

AMD FX6300

8GB RAM

Evga GTX 460

Thanks.

  • Double-click mb3-setup-1878.1878-3.5.1.2522.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:

    • Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
Do NOT use spoilers.
Do NOT edit your reply to post additional logs. Create new reply. I'll not get any email notifications about edits so I won't know you posted something new.

Thanks for the reply Broni!

I wasn't able to connect to the internet with Safe mode with Networking; so I was unable to update the programs that had the option to. I ran the scans regardless. Also MBAM found something called "roboot64.exe" and elected to Ignore only once; but I moved it to Quarantine instead just in case-- if you'd like me to remove it from Quarantine and re-do the process please let me know.

After running all the programs I was also unable to log on normally; I still experience extremely slow load times when I try to. Though Safe Mode runs fine for the most part, I'm starting to think it's an impending HDD failure.

I don't see much there.

Did you try system restore to before it happened?

System restore had no recovery points. Refresh apparently isn't available for those that had Win8.0 via retail that upgraded through Microsoft online for 8.1. So I tried to run cskdsk through command prompt with no /r or /f.. and from my understanding it should have completed relatively quick since I added no repair commands but it became stuck at 65% for over 2-3 hrs. So I assume it's a hdd failure. :(

You could close the thread unless you think it might be something else.

Thanks for your help though, Broni!

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic28744.html/page__view__findpost__p__160520
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba hard drives, see here: http://storage.toshiba.com/storage-services-support/warranty-support/software-utilities#diagnostic

Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
