Very slow Windows 7 startup and other processes

Back a couple of months ago, something happened one day on a computer that I manage.  I have scanned and re-scanned with multiple methods as recommended here for viruses.  I've run GMER, the Kaspersky tool, SuperAntiSpyware, MBAM, and also AVG.  Everything has come back negative, so I don't think we've caught any sort of bug. 

 

I have run sfc to look for corrupted system files and it comes up clean.  I've cleaned out TEMP files and prefetch just for good luck.  No joy.

 

We use a cloud storage tool called Egnyte that starts itself during the boot process.  It syncs files in a particular directory with the online storage, making these files available on every other system where we run the client.  The first symptom of this issue was when Egnyte started popping up an error dialog during system startup that referred to a VB error while running a startup script.  Looking at the error reveals that it was unable to fulfill a GetObject call in the startup script.  This error may or may not leave Egnyte properly functioning without some manual intervention to kick off the service.

 

At the same time, we started having issues with our backup software (Genie Timeline).  It runs a service in the background, and this service now does not want to run, so the backups aren't getting done.  Removing and re-installing this software does not make a difference.

 

I worked with one of Egnyte's tech support people for a couple hours one day trying lots of things to get rid of the error dialog. That experience led me to believe that we had a more general issue with the computer because nothing we tried worked.  Also, since the backup software was also having difficulty, this sort of pointed towards a broader issue.

 

All processes that run on this computer seem to take about 4 to 10 times longer than they should now.  There is no massive amount of CPU or disk activity going on, so it seems to be spinning its wheels doing nothing somehow.  One example is Egnyte.  It should literally take it less than a minute to check for changed files, see that there aren't any and stop the process.  Now, it takes several minutes to do this, and it hangs for a LONG time on processes like "deleting old logs".

 

Not only are the above issues occurring, but also things like running a browser and hitting a web site seem to take much longer than they should.  Instead of taking a second or two to bring up a web site, it may hang for several seconds on a blank screen or even a partially populated screen, then it will suddenly speed up and act normal.

 

Everything is just VERY slow, causing a great impact to productivity on this machine.

I would uninstall:

 

Ad-Aware Antivirus (Version: 10.5.0.4339)
Ad-Aware Security Add-on (Version: 2.5.0.6)
AVG SafeGuard toolbar (Version: 18.0.0.250)
Egnyte Desktop Sync v8.0.1 (Version: 8.0.1.0)
Java...either update it or uninstall.  Current version installed impairs system security by being subject to known vulnerabilities overcome by later versions.

Roxio BackOnTrack (Version: 1.3.3)
Roxio File Backup (Version: 1.3.2)
 

I would replace the Ad-Aware software with the Microsoft Security Essentials and the Windows Firewall, at least until all is sorted.

 

I see no reason to install AVG products...when you don't have AVG as your AV.  Actually, I would not recommend AVG as a "solution" for anything (my bias).

 

Uninvstall of the Egnuyte product...seems self-explanatory, based on known problems with it.

Roxio Back On Track and Roxio File Backup should be removed until you are sure that neither contributes to system problems.

 

There is no clear path that I see...your system has a lot of possibilities as to what may going wrong, IMO.

Thanks for your help, Louis!!  Already I noticed from the post above that the WMI service wasn't running.  I found a post online about registering some DLLs and that actually eliminated the error from the Egnyte startup.  Also, the machine seems to be booting much faster.

 

But some things still seem slow, so here's the speccy link:

Your Windows Firewall reflects a "disabled" status...that needs be manually enabled by you for system protection.

 

Running: vToolbarUpdater18.0.0, I would disable this service if it remains after uninstalling the AVG toolbar.  Speccy reflects as a currently running service.
Path: C:\Program Files\Common Files\AVG Secure Search\vToolbarUpdater\18.0.0\ToolbarUpdater.exe
Path: C:\Program Files\AVG SafeGuard toolbar\vprot.exe
 
Please check your scheduled items...remove any item that has been or should be uninstalled.
 
After all this, it won't hurt to run the chkdsk /r command on your C: partition.

How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk) - Windows 7 - http://www.w7forums.com/use-chkdsk-check-disk-t448.html , see Command Prompt Method and you can use chkdsk /r rather than what is stated (the /r command includes the functions done by /f, no redundancy is necessary).

Enabled firewall and killed that AVG business.

 

Things are MUCH faster now, but I still can't get the Genie backup service to run.  I am exchanging logs with their customer support so hopefully we can get that sorted out.

Do you have to use that backup program?  If not (there seem to be tons of them), I would simply try a different one which meets my needs.
