Hey,

I've recently had Jag11 help me out with my problem on my laptop and was told to start a new thread.

Well, my desktop has not been protected with any anti-virus program since it expired (previously using Norton SystemWorks) and I would like to know if my computer is infected since the lack of protection. With the help I received, it's a lot easier/faster than reformatting my computer so I thought I'd post here.

Here is my HijackThis logfile (May 17, 2006):

Hello Jeff and welcome to the forum. If you still need help, let's try this.

1) Do you know what this is? C:\Program Files\Jpxowe\Zurn.exe Looks like a problem to me, if you want to check it use one or more of these free online scans and share the results with me:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

2) Looks like HJT has no folder on the deaktop. If this is the case, right click a blank spot and make a new folder. Move HJT.exe and the log that is there into the folder where backups for safety will also store.

3) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs and uninstall Jpxowe and any other item you know does not belong there. If you are not sure, let me know and I will look.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Diuqld] C:\Program Files\Jpxowe\Zurn.exe
O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe (file missing)
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.imgfarm.com/images/nocache/funwe...tup1.0.0.15.cab
O16 - DPF: {88D758A3-D33B-45FD-91E3-67749B4057FA} - http://dm.screensavers.com/dm/installers/si/1/sinstaller.cab

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\Jpxowe\ >>> folder

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete the contents (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_...refetch-XP.html

Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT long along with your comments. How is the computer running now?

Thanks...pskelley
BleepingComputer

Well, my desktop has not been protected with any anti-virus program since it expired (previously using Norton SystemWorks) and I would like to know if my computer is infected since the lack of protection.

If your virus protection is expired, it is only a matter of time before you get severely infected. If you can't update what you have, here are several free ones:
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
http://www.free-av.com/
You must uninstall Norton first, see this: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.n...000031316555206

2) Done. Completed moving the HJT file and the log into a folder.

3) I clicked Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs but could not find Jpxowe but it was later deleted in Step 4. And I'm not too sure what doesn't belong there.

4) Ran the HJT System Scan Only and fixed the checked items. Also, enabling the hidden files&folders and reversed the process. I also deleted the Jpxowe folder and the contents in C:\Windows\Prefetch. Ran the CCleaner and backed up and removed the files.

Here is the updated HijackThis log report (May 20, 2006):

On a side note, which free Anti-Virus and Firewall program do you recommend? I've read good/bad reviews so I'd like to know your input on it. Thanks.

Hi Jeff, your HJT log looks fine. You are aware of this information:
http://castlecops.com/startuplist-2034.html

Here are three good free antivirus programs.
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
http://www.free-av.com/
I install AVG by Grisoft on my sisters computer.

I use Zone Alarm free on two of my computers, and here are three free ones:

http://www.tinysoftware.com/home/tiny2?s=5...t05&an=tf6_home
http://www.jetico.com/index.htm#/jpfirewall.htm

I suggest you use HJT to remove these:
O9 - Extra button: Noble Poker - {B723B1B8-9788-4684-ADA7-D1DB02E1D516} - C:\Program Files\Noble Poker\casino.exe G
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Noble Poker - {B723B1B8-9788-4684-ADA7-D1DB02E1D516} - C:\Program Files\Noble Poker\casino.exe
These websites are nothing but trouble.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
