For years my motto was, when it starts acting crazy reformat. I've decided it's to much work to reformat, and lose everything.

I was just wanting an opinion on what Firewall / Antivirus combo to go getting.

I wanna get a free one for now. But out of the big payed prodcuts (norton, mcafee) what would be the best one to spend 40-50 dollars on?

Thanks for the help.

Never again pay for computer security software.
The best software in the world is absolutely FREE.
Here's a list to get you started.
***************************************
These are the programs I use every day to keep my own PC spotlessly clean.
I suggest every person having any Virus or Spyware issues get these programs
and use them immediately.
Do check for updates to all your security software on a DAILY basis.

SPYWARE/Trojan BLOCKERS/REMOVERS:

Trojan Hunter, is a first class Trojan Horse Virus removal program.
The dowloaded version is a 30 day, Fully Functional, free trial.
Use the Free Trial to clean up a Dirty system or buy the retail license to have a year of
full service plus updates. Download "Trojan Hunter" here:
http://www.misec.net/trojanhunter/
From the web page, just click "Download Free Trial Version"
It's a 5.9 meg download.

Spybot Search & Destroy, a great anti Spyware program.
Can be downloaded from:
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_desc...id,22262,00.asp
For instructions on how to set up Spybot for best operation,
See my Spybot Setup instructions on this webpage.

AdAware SE/Personal. Another top notch anti Spyware program.
Can be downloaded from:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html

Spyware Blaster, a great Spyware Blocker.
Protects both I.E. and Mozilla Firefox.
Can be downloaded from:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2859.html

ANTI-VIRUS PROTECTION:

AVG 7.1 FREE:
World famous AVG FREE will keep your computer free of viruses, trojans, dialers, etc.
By default, it updates and scans for viruses on a daily basis.
Can be downloaded from:
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
Save to your desktop and run the install from there.
Immediately get updates. More than one may be required.

Stinger: Stand Alone Virus Scanner
Check for new version, once a week.
Can be downloaded from:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
Save to your Desktop and run from there.

vCleaner, Stand Alone Virus Checker from Grisoft.
Can be downloaded from:
http://www.infinitevelocity.com/tips/tips_vcleaner.htm
Save to your Desktop and run from there.

REGISTRY CLEANER:

Easy Cleaner, the best Registry Cleaner I've found so far.
Can be downloaded from:
http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/ecleane.htm
Personal Website = (http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts).
Just scroll down to "Download & Installation" and click on the first floppy disk symbol.

FIREWALL:

The XP windows firewall is only a 50% firewall, blocking incoming hackers but doing nothing to stop any ET that's already on your PC from "Phoning Home". It seems like almost every program you install anymore, wants to "Phone Home". It's a good idea to NOT allow this activity. My suggested Firewall to prevent this activity is the FREE version of a world famous product called "Zone Alarm".
ZA can be downloaded from:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/cata...lid=dbtopnav_za

Happy Computing!

If you do all of the above, your PC will love you and you'll have the cleanest PC in the neighborhood.
*******************************************

Cheers!
For those wanting, or needing the Norton Removal Tool,
it's latest version is available Here:

I never get my bread and my milk at the same store, to paraphrase JC Penny, and I would never have a single application/vendor provide all of my computer security, since at best the different modules are uneven in functionality. I prefer to pick and choose from a variety of vendors, each of whom specialise in one aspect of security and focus their resources and development on that.
You will find recommended freeware in this recently updated forum topic:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic3616.html

I myself have relied on AVG and SygatePersonalFirewall for well over three years, and have found both to be highly effective.

Regards,
John

Never again pay for software you say  I like that idea ;)
I'm gonna try that. I do have SpyBod S&D already, I'll locate AVG Free and stuff, I did have Sygate before, but I had an upload problem with that. I couldn't attach to emails upload via FTP. or post on websites without changing it to "Allow All" , other then that I'm gonna get all that stuff on a *need it* basis, since that Trojan thing was a trial after all.

OK, I got AVG Free running and I'm doin a scan of my PC, it found 1 virus already, which is what I was expecting (*prays it doesn't find more*) ; Now my question is, is a firewall (software) really necessary, I have a hardware firewall and from my test results over at www.grc.com it seems i'm only unsecure on ports that I want to be unsecure on (I run a dedicated game server).... What will the software do that the hardware won't, besides tell me whats tryin to access the internet?

Yes IMO its necesarry with a firewall, also if you are behind a NAT router.Zonealrm is good and free.
Today I use Kasperskys KIS 6.
Before that,I thought Windows firewll had to be enough. It wasnt.
And Im behind a NAT router!

Its simply, the more layers you have, the better protected you are.
Unfortunately its necesarry to secure ones computer really good in 2006.Its not enough to have an antivirus application anymore.
Adaware and Spybot is 2 good antispy scanners.(also necesarry..one of them :flowers: ).

Edited by Nevi, 19 May 2006 - 09:22 PM.

Prevx 3.0 with Safeonline.Sandboxie,NAT router.

I guess I'm into overkill.

I have Avast AV (I like that it updates itself), ZoneAlarm firewall, Spybot S&D (scan on start-up), Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard, Winpatrol, Processguard (excellent for rootkits, trojans, keyloggers etc), AdawareSE, Ewido, SpySweeper (paid for but worth every penny), Window Washer (runs on shut down), Windows Defender beta.

These all work well together on Win XP SP2 and with all these layers nothing gets thru.
It sucks that we have been reduced to this but it beats the heck out of cleaning up AFTER the baddies have done their thing.
