Hi,

thanks in advance for your help.

This is my first time on Bleeping. I have used a different anti-malware site some years ago, but I forget the name.
About a month ago I had trouble getting some apps to function. Suspecting a virus, I ran MWBytes which turned up one of the Rootkit.necurs family of butthurt.

So I looked it up and found out what a pain it is and how it can defeat a lot of anti malware apps.
Being busy at the time I just shut the laptop down and fired up the older desktop so as to continue working.
Now I have more time and inclination, I restarted the LT and wish to move on and clean it. However, so far, nothing seems to be wrong. (Not that I've done much yet.)

Unfortunately since I haven't had a virus in years so I didn't follow good protocols like writng down the actual file MWB found - sorry.
Below is the closest I found to anyone with a similar issue.

So I guess the first step is to determine the real state of this machine.
Thank you for your assistance.

Bryan.

With a troublesome rootkit .. The best procedure is to start a new topic.

We need a deeper look. Please follow this Preparation Guide, and post in a new topic.
Let me know if all went well.

Hi boompe,
Thanks for the lightning response and your help.
Quick query before proceeding with your instructions. The preparation page is asking me to dload DDS. On the dload page it doesn't mention Win8 as an operating system. Just XP/Vista and Win7.

Still good to go?

Thanks,

Bryan

OK, yes DDS is not Win 8 supported, So just repost your Post 1 there and state "running Win8 so cannot do DDS."
They will understand.

Did a bit of research on backwards comaptibility and decided to go ahead.

Downloaded OK, into the Downloads folder.

Windows won't allow me create a shortcut to put onto the desktop.
Tried to open from dload icon, top right tool bar, got a dialog box says "DDS is not meant to run in 'compatibility mode'. The program shall now exit."
Thanks,

Bryan

OK, missed your reply - doing now.

Thanks

Thanks

Now that your log is properly posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a Malware Removal Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.
From this point on the Malware Removal Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.
Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the Malware Removal Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the Malware Removal Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another MRL Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.
The current wait time is 1 - 3 days and ALL logs are answered.
If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.
To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic.
