My desktop is XP, IE8 v8.0.6001.18702.

A new program updater with WinPatrolPlus tells me that there is a newer version, v11.00.9600.16521 so I first went to the MS IR Downloads page. There was nothing there that referred to a version number but I downloaded it anyway - twice.

I still have the v8x.

Microsoft's site is not at all helpful - now way to check for the latest version of a product and I next went to the user community help. Looks pretty and has a fast filter to get to your product but then I was stuck. There's no 'create new message' button. I then rang their 5p fee plus 5p a minute telephone help line, selecting Downloads Help. (Roughly 8 US cents a minute).

After 20 minutes of ads the woman who answered said her team don't deal with this kind of download problem!

So I'm now doing what I probably should have done straightaway - ask the helpful experts here.

(1) How can I check for the latest version of IE8 please and

(2) Can I download it from another site, any one except Microsoft?

Fingers crossed.

PS I have a new Win7 IE11 desktop ready to set up.

IE8 is the last version to support installation on Windows XP, so you certainly will not be able to use IE11.

8.00.6001.18702 is the Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008

Checking on Microsoft Update is the way to have IE8 patched to the latest security updates - next month will be the last issued for components utilizing XP as the host OS.
