Can outdated programs mess up the installation process of an external hard drive

Is this possible? Is it possible that it might mess up the transfer process when I try to back files up onto it from my ASUS laptop?

I'm confused by the title and then the subject of your topic. Please clarify your question. Your title asks about installing an external drive. The content of your topic asks about the back up process. I'm confused.
