Hi all,

My computer keeps bluescreening but that's not the issue (for now). Because it keeps doing this I've set it up to create minidumps on crash as outlined here http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/174459-dump-files-configure-windows-create-bsod.html

I had it set to auto-restart because usually when I'm using the computer I need to get on with things, but I noticed my C:\Windows\Minidump folder remained empty. After googling a bit I tried taking auto-restart off so it would have a chance to write the log.

The next convenient time it crashed I left it on the blue-death-screen for 20 minutes and the text never got past "Initiating disk for crash dump".

I'm not too experienced, so am I simply not leaving it long enough and making a dump takes a number of hours or has something gone wrong?

I'm running Windows Home Premium 64 bit, if that helps.

A minidump should take less than a minute to create.

A number of things need to be in place for a minidump to be created:

  1. The pagefile must be located on the same partition that the operating system is installed upon.
  2. The smallest (base) size of the pagefile must be larger than the installed physical RAM. E.g. if you have 4GB of RAM which equals 4096MB, then the base pagefile size must be larger than 4096.
  3. The Windows Error Reporting Service need to be set to Manual.

If you need any assistance with checking and changing these settings, please reply back.

If...you are running Ccleaner, it deletes all dump files.  The default settings regard dump files as "of no value" which makes me wonder about the developers of Ccleaner :).

Thanks guys.

I do have Ccleaner Louis but I've never ran it between the computer crashing and my searching for the dump. Is it something it does automatically and should I uncheck 'memory dumps' anyway?

dls62, the only thing I understood there was the last one and I don't know how to change that so I'm gonna have to take you up on the offer of assistance checking those settings.

Thanks again both of you.

Ok,
  • Click on Start, enter services.msc in the Search box and press Enter.
  • In the Services window that opens, locate Windows Error Reporting Service, right-click on it and select 'Properties'.
  • In the Properties window that opens, locate Startup type: and, if it is not already set to Manual, change it using the drop-down list.
  • Click OK and then close the Services window.
  • To verify the other settings and to possibly give clues to the cause of the blue screens, please do the following:
  • Download MiniToolBox by Farbar to your Desktop and run it.
  • Check-mark the following boxes:
    • List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
    • List Installed Programs
    • List Devices – Only Problems
    • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
    • List Minidump Files
  • Click Go and copy and paste the contents of the log (Result.txt) into your reply.

Ok, so error reporting was already set to manual.

As for the rest, here you go:

The system errors listed could cause restarts, but without creating a dump file.

Go to:

C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking

and delete the file(s) named idstore.

(You may need to unhide hidden files to see the folder - Organize > Folder and search options > View tab.  Select Show hidden files, folders and drives and click OK.)

Restart the system.

Done.

Guess I'll just have to wait for it to crash again now.

Thanks man.

Crashed again and still no minidumps.

Thing is I'm fairly sure it's Avast causing the crashes (the bluescreens cite aswSnx.sys) which is easily fixed, but I'd like to get minidumps working in case I have harder to pin down or more complex problems in the future.
