Hi Everyone,

                      I think the 'Topic Title' really sums it up. I can see that the Win.Install Module is set to Manual and 'running' and I seem to have tried all the online advice I can find, including switching it off and back on again, but to no avail.

                      The last update which has been awaiting upload for about 2weeks now is for Microsoft Silverlite. but the box says 'Windows Installer can not be accessed'. I have tried to uninstall Silverlite, but it says the 'windows installer service could not be accessed' as previously.Programmes that are already installed will update from their respective sources.

                       My main problem, (to me) is that I don't know when it all started, although I have been into the Win.Update log, and can see some installed and some didn't in mid February.  I've downloaded the Microsoft 'MrFixit', for this problem, -- but that can't help me either.

                       Generally the PC is running fine, but the lack of updates the longer it goes on, is a concern.

                        All help will be greatly appreciated

                        Best Wishes to All  -- astaqq UK

Hi dis62,

                    Thanks for the input, I've just tried Method 1, as pasted below.

==================================================================================================================================

Method 1: Reset the Windows Installer Service settings in the registry

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 322756 How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

To reset the Windows Installer Service settings in the registry, create a registry file by using Notepad. Then, run the file to update the registry key.

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then type Notepad in the Search box.
  2. Under the Programs heading, click Notepad.exe.
  3. Copy the following text, and then paste it into a notepad:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\msiserver]

    "NextInstance"=dword:00000001
  4. Click File, click Save As, and then name the file Msirepair.reg.
  5. In the Save as type box, click All Files (*.*).
  6. In the Save in box, click Desktop, and then click Save.
  7. On the File menu, click Exit to close notepad.
  8. On the Desktop, right-click Msirepair.reg, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted to enter an administrator password or provide confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
  9. Click Yes when you are prompted to install the registry keys.
  10. Restart the installation process for the program that you want to install.

==================================================================================================================

OK down to 8. but on right click on Msisrepair.reg 'Run as Administrator' unfortunately wasn't an option on the dropdown. ??

Method 2. I've tried previously without success, and Method 3. -- I haven't any earlier versions to un-install.

Thanks again and Best Regards  --  astaqq

You're right.  An error in the article by the look of things.

Right-click on the file and select Merge.

Hi dis62,

                Thanks for that, yes that appears at the top of the dropdown, but before I do that, when it's 'merged', and it says '

  1. Restart the installation process for the program that you want to install. --- what do I do then, ? ---  I can follow instructions, but am not sufficiently 'savvy' to know what is going to happen next.
  2. Has this happened to you by any chance, as I really want to know how it came to be as it is.???
  3. again Regards  astaqq

Once you have merged the registry file, restart the computer and then re-run Windows Update to see if the updates will install.

Registry corruption can occur for many reasons.  All you are doing is resetting some registry entries to try and resolve the problem.  The fact that Microsoft has written a support article for it tells you that it is not an uncommon problem.
