I mistakenly installed Googles task bar  while setting up my new Windows 8.1 computer and would like it gone.

IMO use Revo to fully uninstall it.  Down load the free version.  http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

Have you tried Google's instructions?

To uninstall from the Toolbar
  1. Click the down arrow next to the Toolbar's wrench toolbarwrench.png icon.
  2. Select Uninstall from the drop-down menu.
  3. Click OK.
To uninstall from the Add or Remove Programs Control Panel
  1. Click the Windows Start menu button.
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Programs and Features.
  4. Double-click Google Toolbar for IE.

Your quote is awesome. I knew we are made up of star material that somehow got transformed into organic chemistry, but I had never heard it put in such a poetic fashion.

I should have said I mistakenly installed the task bar in Google Chrome. In searching for a fix to this problem I find many people have the same problem and in trying to just remove  Google Chrome in Add and Remove programs it cannot be done as there is a problem with the program. Now when I go to Google Chrome it says there is a problem because it didn't close properly. Sorry for not being more specific.

As I understand now, you cannot only uninstall the toolbar but you also can't uninstall the Chrome browser.

If that is true then use the program suggested by OldPhil to uninstall all of Chrome.

http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

You can also try booting into safe mode and then attempt to uninstall Chrome from the Add Remove program.

How To Start Windows 8 or 8.1 in Safe Mode

You should run this program to remove adware.

download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Delete.
Confirm each time with Ok.
You will be prompted to restart your computer. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
