Good Day,

My dear son last night somehow caused our system to eat malware; my guess. I have these icons in the system tray of which all claim our computer is infected up the wazoo, and of course when clicking on these icons they all furnish a free scan and a remedy--$$$

Now, I have done everything suggested and recommended and have the hyjackthis report.

BTW, I have been using, and of course used since last night, Ad-Aware and Spybot. Both have removed stuff, but clearly not what is needed to be removed. Note: Spybot had a problem; first in years, so we uninstalled and reinstalled and she is up and running.

Here is what hyjackthis had to say:

Hello,

It's better to print out the next instructions or save them in notepad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then.
It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!

You are using Download Accelerator - DAP Be informed that it delivers popup/popunder ads, and tracks your internet usage. You can find safer alternatives here: http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads.php?cat=dlman#dlman
I suggest you remove it. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove it.

* Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
Don't use it yet.

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: Nothing - {b0398eca-0bcd-4645-8261-5e9dc70248d0} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp724.tmp
O16 - DPF: {65FDEDF3-8ED9-4F5B-825E-18C2D44191A7} (OneCCCtl Class) - http://d.69.25.47.73.downloads.estara.com....684825OneCC.cab
O16 - DPF: {96AD66E6-8375-4864-8F4D-0F15023C2AF6} (CWUInstall Object) - http://www.wunderground.com/windowsinstall/weather.cab

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
* Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; I need that log afterwards.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Update your Sun Java:
Updating Java via Controlpanel:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
  • It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
(If you can't find the Java Icon, click 'Other Control Panel Options' in the leftpane first)
  • Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
* Perform an onlinescan with panda: (please use this scanner instead of any other scanner!)
Panda Online
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report in your next reply along with a new HijackThis Log,
the contents of rapport.txt which is present on your Homedrive (C:\ in most cases) by using Add Reply.

Ehm, not sure here... did you already perform all my steps in 15 minutes?

Can you also post the logs I asked? Because that is with a reason.

[b]

Good Day!

Sorry, we had to run on a fire call. Before the results, you live in a nice place! Hoping it is most comfortable and you enjoy each day. We live in the Virgin Islands; tropical storms and hurricanes! Most of the time, its just great!!!

Looks as though we found something on the panda Scan not good. Panda's remedy is their software for $12.95.

BTW, we know that Spyfalcon shot some of their trojans in because we downloaded and used SUPERAntiSpyware and it found it and removed them last night. Spyfalcon also brought along same from two (2) other company types> so-called wanting to help for money! Their system tray icons were "just-a-dancing" and "blinking" and giving us "various warnings". Personally, I strongly feel these companies should be made to close down. Below is the information you needed. No problems during the course you laid out for us.

SmitFraudFix v2.44

There is no button I see to: [click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.]

I still have it on-line so if you will further direct me as to where this save report button is I will do my best to get the information.

Hi,

Not sure how you tried to save the log from Panda. When the scan was finished, wasn't there an option to save the log? It should though.

Panda's remedy is their software for $12.95.

That's why I need the log, so we can deal with it manually.

If you really see/find no option to save the log, just copy and paste or type what it found in your next reply (filename and filepath)

Can you also post a new hijackthislog please?

Personally, I strongly feel these companies should be made to close down. Below is the information you needed. No problems during the course you laid out for us.

yes, and you can help here. just take a look on the following site: http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/viewforum.php?f=2

Three of us looked for a way to save et cetera and could find nothing. However, interestingly enough, if you run the cursor over it and paste it in the clipboard you can see where; information not seen if you are directly looking at it. We can do another hijackthis, but the same way, or another way? The scan will take time as we only have dial up.

Hi,

Found from the scan was 1 Spyware and 2 in the Hacking tools category.

Most probably the pandascan only listed the process.exe from smitfraudfix, which is a false positive and a cookie... so that's ok here.

So only post a hijackthislog (in the same way as you did before)

Clean log here. Only one thing to perform..
Let me know in your next reply how things are running now.

Good Day,

We did the Java update yesterday, but did it again today. I also set it for daily update. Not sure just what this Java does...only drink many on a daily basis.

I did a scan again and it still comes up:

Virus 0
Spyware 1
Hacking Tools and potentially unwanted tools 2
Dialers 0
Security Risks 0
Suspicious files 0

I have writen Panda to see why we cannot view a report; however, perhaps reports are only furnished if a virus is found(?) COPY BELOW

>>>Good Day,

{When finishing the Panda scan we seen no ability to check the results: How can I consult the results of the report?

When the scan has finished, if a virus has been found, you can see a report of the results.

The report contains several columns which show the names of the viruses detected, where the infected files were located and the action that Panda ActiveScan has taken.

The Gillette Family}

Other than this, the computer appears to now be under control; no more pop-ups and all the other interesting stuff going on. Shall we now release the patient from the hospital? :flowers:

Hello,

I am pretty sure what Panda found was process.exe (one present in the zipped smitfraudfix) and once present in the unzipped smitfraudfix-folder or system32-folder.
So nothing to worry about here... Process.exe is a command line tool used by smitrem to kill processes with. That's why Panda sees it as a potentially unwanted tool.

Yes, you may release the patient from hospital...

and here are the medicines :

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

The result from House Call:
HouseCall did not find any potential threats on your computer. Make sure you run HouseCall once a week to keep your PC clean and malware free.

The Betdefender will take several hours. I will run that during the night. SpywareBlaster is back on-line. I have had it, but side-lined it because it never gives any indication that it has done anything other than use up system resources. We run all of Stardock software and Wincustomize and I figured why have something operational if it does not appear to be working for its food. We have IE 7 and I have made sure there is no home page on that, or SlimBrowser, or Firefox. Our primary antivirus is AVG and we use ZoneAlarm as the firewall.

Greatly appreciate all that you have done and recommended and are now taking all steps necessary to secure. I will fight back via the link you have noted.
