Windows Defender times out when trying to turn it on via the control panel, and Microsoft Security Essentials refuses to install/Update.

What can be done to fix this?

Hi,

What you describe sounds very much like an infection trying to protect itself.

I'd recommend visiting this forum

Not sure what you are saying...what...doesn't show up...and what uninstaller are you attempting to use?

Add/Remove Programs is the Windows facility for uninstalling programs.

Sorry.  MSE doesn't show up in either Add or Remove programs, or Revo Uninstaller, so I can't uninstall it to turn on Windows Defender.  However, MSE's shortcut is still located in the Start Menu, and when I use Search, it finds it an MSE icon.  When I click on the MSE icon, it says that the program failed during program initialization. I can't even update MSE to uninstall it.

Hope this clears things up.
