I have a windows7, 64 bit,  Dell studio XPS Desktop computer.

The problem has been persistently getting worse. Symptoms:

- computer freezes

- reboots without warning

- shuts down completely

- monitor display goes dark but computer stays on

- blue screen

- screen goes dark with small circle in center of screen and computer frozen ( most recent today)

I have McAfee and it detects no viruses. also I've run Malware Bytes and detects no viruses.

one more thing, I can't do a ctrl-alt-del...nothing happens....only works in safe mode.

Please help!

Sam

Hello 1sjen,

With those types of issues, it sounds like it may be hardware related.

First, let's test the computer's memory to make sure it is good. See this memtest tutorial for instructions on how to use memtest.

Next up will be testing your harddrive, but let's see how the memory turns out first.

Please download and install Speccy to provide us with information about your computer.  When  FileHippo opens, click on Download latest version in the upper right pane.

When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.

It really isn't too bad - essentially you load a program onto a DVD or flash drive, then boot from the DVD or flashdrive and let the program run.

The directions and specifics of it all make it sound a lot more complicated than it is. :)

The Speccy snap shot doesn't show any indications that there is a problem with the hdd, neither does the MiniToolBox.

For testing purposes please download Avast antivirus, do not install it yet.

Take your computer off line and uninstall McAfee, then install Avast and run a full scan with it.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

1)  Double-click on mbam-setup.exe, then click on Run to install the application, follow the prompts through the installation.

2)  When the installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:

    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Then click on Finish.

3)  MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.

4)  Click on perform Quick Scan, then click on the Scan button.

If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.

5)  The scan will now begin, this may take some time to complete so please be patient.

6)  When the scan is finished click on Show Results to display all objects found.

7)  Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.

8)  Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.

Make sure that every item shown in the results has a check mark in the box next to it, then click on Remove Selected.

9)  When removal is completed, a log will open in Notepad.

This log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next post, then exit MBAM.

Important:  If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Reagardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Please copy the Malwarebytes log and paste it in your next post.

To locate this file right click on the Start orb and choose Open Windows Explorer, then click on C: drive.

When the C: drive opens click on the following:  ProgramData, Malwarebytes, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Logs.

If there is more than one log, choose the log with the date that you ran scan that I requested.

If there are a large number of items found you can go into Settings and click on Scanner Settings to change the setting in Action for potentially unwanted programs (PUP) to Show in results list and check for removal.

Due to general experience with it and other people I know in IT, I would uninstall McAfee first.

After perusing the logs, it seems to me that the McAfee is either corrupted ot interferes with something resulting in it crashing. The Dell 'Stage' application seems to crash at about the same time every day. I wouls uninstall McAfee first then go offline. I generally recommend removing Java these days due to the wide variety of threats that use it. Avast is a good product that won't cause headaches or slowdowns but will give you some advertising pop ups(probably just like the paid stuff). I don't see anything indicating HDD problems nor video problems.

The freezing and random reboots can easily be the result of a failing power supply. You have an older i7 using Socket 1366 and muy research indicates it draws 130W. The video card is a Radeon 5800 series card, which means any one of the 5830, 5850 or 5870. These 3 cards all draw more than160W. A quick trip top the Newegg.com power supply calculator shows a need for a 550W or more likely 600W PSU, at least. I would choose 700W or 750W. I have a PSU tester that I use to check these things with. As the  S1366 CPUs were End of Line June 2012, I would suspect your machine is older than that and probably could use a nice new PSU. The roughly $100 it would cost for a new one would see this beast to the end of its days, most likely.

Good luck.

The reason they should download Avast first is so that they will have an antivirus running at the time they make the download.

I was unclear and posted without careful reading. I meant 'go offline and uninstall McAfee' of course. The spelling errors are mine.

Have you done a memory upgrade on this computer at some point?  It appears you have a mixture of 1Gb Samsung modules and 2Gb Nanya modules (9Gb total).  Have any problems coincided with upgrading the memory (if that is indeed what you did?).

Also assuming the computer was idling (or at least not running any intensive programs) while the Speccy screenshot was taken, the processor temperature of 66 looks rather high to me for an idle temperature.  Processor temperature can vary a great deal between idle and full load (mine for example can increase by 30 degrees c under load).  If it did head up to the 90's or above under load, that would cause throttling and stability problems.

I would suggest checking that the processor fan and heatsink are clear of dust.

EDIT just to add I note the processor is reported as running at 1600mhz (50% of it's rated speed of 3.2Ghz) suggesting it's under no load, so I'm pretty confident that will overheat when loaded up and the processor switches to full speed mode.

The i7 930 throttles down at 100c, this is its maximum temperature.  If the CPU isn't exceeding 80c it should be fine.

You might be able to keep the temperature lower by replacing the stock heat sink and fan.

As jonuk76 suggested, you should check to see if there is an accumulation of dust inside the case, and specifically in the CPU heat sink and fan assembly.  There is a vent on the front of the case where fresh air is drawn in, you should check to see if this is clean as well.  To clean the dust you should use a gas duster product like Blow Off Duster, Dust Off, etc.  When you go to blow out the inside of the fan you should place the eraser end of a pencil through the blade to keep it from spinning.

Obviously you want to perform this with the power off, you might even go so far as to unplug the computer from the wall.

Something eve more important is to touch the metal of the case before you touch anything inside the case.  The human body stores static electricity.  As little a ten volts can kill integrated circuits.  You know that spark you see shoot off the tip of your finger when you go to touch a door knob on a winter day?  It hurts, right?  The threshold for the voltage to cause this type of pain is two or three thousand volts.
