Need help, this has been going on far too long.

At first I thought it was just slow internet, but it seems everything is slow. Me and my girlfriend have identical laptops. We both have periods where our computers hang, nothing loads, nothing opens, not even task manager, for minutes, sometimes up to 10 minutes just after waking it up or start up, but normally just about 1 or 2. It becomes most prominent when using the internet. We get the message "Waiting for cache..." and it just sits there for over a minute before finally everything loads up. This will happen every few minutes. While this is happening, if we try to open something like My Videos, the window opens, but nothing is show and the loading bar up the top slowly fills up, and once the internet finally loads, then our computers stop hanging.

This has been going on for some months. Initially I fixed my computer by updating windows, installing a trial of MalwareBytes Pro, and running Panda Cloud Scanner. It found some stuff but nothing much. I did the same to my girlfriends laptop but hers never improved. Mine was fine for weeks until just the other day, right about when the MalwareBytes Pro trial ended. I upgraded it to pro on a hunch maybe that could be the solution, but no it did not. Now it's back to both mine and my girlfriends computer running through these hanging periods.

Specs:

i7 3612QM 2.1Ghz
6GB DDR3 Ram
AMD Radeon HD 7730M
Windows 7 Home Premium SP1
using Chrome for internet.

Any help please would be greatly appreciated. I honestly have no idea why our laptops are doing this, while every other computer on the same network runs just fine.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

That was one of the first things I tried months ago, and I clear the cache on a regular basis anyway. No such luck. As I mentioned it's the entire computer which hangs, not just Chrome.

can you please boot the pc into safe mode with networking and let me know if the problem you are having still persists. follow the below guide.

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. When the computer starts you will see your computer's hardware being listed. When you see this information start to gently tap the F8 key on your keyboard repeatedly until you are presented with the Windows 7 Advanced Boot Options screen as shown in the image below.

Figure 11. Windows 7 Advanced Boot Options screen
  3. Using the arrow keys, select the Safe Mode with networking option
  4. Then press the enter key on your keyboard to boot into Windows 7 Safe Mode.
  5. When Windows starts you will be at a typical logon screen. Logon to your computer and Windows 7 will enter Safe mode.
  6. Do whatever tasks you require, and when you are done, reboot to go back into normal mode.

ok ill need you to do some troubleshooting.

first disable media sharing in windows media player and see if it helps any, if not move on to the next tutorial to do a clean boot and follow the instructions carefully

Disabling Media Sharing in Media Player

The best way to remove these services is to just use the configuration panel… that way they don’t come back the next time Media Player gets opened, accidentally or otherwise.

Open up Windows Media Player, and then click on the little arrow under “Library” and choose the “Media Sharing” option from the menu.

image63.png

If you are using a custom theme, or otherwise can’t get to that menu, you can also open the Options panel, choose the Library tab, and then click on “Configure Sharing”

image64.png

Either one of the above will bring you to the Media Sharing dialog. Uncheck both of the boxes that you see here.

Note: If they are unchecked, you should check them, click apply, and then uncheck them and click OK… basically to reset the settings.

Once you hit the OK button, you’ll be prompted with an extremely important dialog… do you want to turn sharing off for everybody? Yes!

image66.png

This will actually turn off the service, and remove the startup entry for wmpnscfg.exe. then reboot and see if the problem persists

Performing a Windows 7 Clean Boot

Log in to Windows 7 using an account that has administrative privileges Click on Start>Run. If you don’t have the Run command on your Start menu, you can alternatively hold down the Windows key on your keyboard and press the R key. With the Run dialogue window open, type in msconfig and click the OK button.

You should now be looking at the System Configuration window. Click on the Services tab.

Services-Tab-on-the-System-Configuration

On the Services tab, you’ll notice a long list of services available on your PC. Some have checks next to them and some don’t. Those that do are scheduled to load automatically the next time Windows 7 boots up. This next step is extremely important so don’t skip it.

Perform-Clean-Boot-in-Windows-7_thumb.pn

First, check the box labeled Hide All Microsoft Services. As its name implies, this will hide all Microsoft services on the list. Most if not all of these services are required for Windows 7 to function properly.

Next, click the Disable All button. By performing these two steps, you have effectively turned off all services from third-party software developers. All Microsoft services remain intact and ready to load when you reboot Windows.

Finally, click the OK button and reboot Windows 7. When you reboot, you may get messages that certain hardware and software are not unavailable. This is normal. In fact, by disabling these components in your PC, you can go back to the Services tab on the System Configuration window and turn on only those services known to be functioning properly. The rest you can turn on one at a time to troubleshoot the errors you were getting in Windows 7.

keep enabling each third party service one at a time until you get the hanging again, then we will know that is the one that is causing your problems.

I think disabling the windows media player network sharing service may have done it. Will try it for a while and see how it goes. Also, your instructions were out of date for the media player version on Windows 7. Once in the Options there is no button to press which says Configure Sharing. I had to go into Services and find the service in the list, stop and disable it.

Let's hope it fixes it. Will let you know. Thanks!

Okay turns out it was the ESET Service for the antivirus. I've since had to download an uninstaller to remove everything, and updated to the latest version of it. Seems to be going fine so far. How odd though, I've been using that antivirus for a long time and only in the last couple of months did it start giving us problems.. Let's hope that's the end of that.

I am glad we were able to pinpoint the cause. I am guessing your girlfriend also uses ESET? I personally use avast. Although as long as you are a safe web surfer, most will recommend Microsoft Security Essentials as it plays very well with windows and is very light weight. Give that a thought.

Let me know if you have anymore issues!

Could be a conflict with specific pre-installed manufacturer software on the laptops, or any software you both have installed.
You're welcome and good luck
