I have read that if a person upgrades to Windows 8.1 from the Windows Store (free) rather than purchasing it for $199.00 retail) they will not be able to do a system refresh or a system reset.  Microsoft is aware of this but has not fixed it.  There are several files that will not allow the refresh or reset.  If you purchase the retail version of Windows 8.1 or buy a machine with Windows 8.1 installed you should be O.K.

Does anyone know anything about this.  I have a friend that has just bought Windows 8 Asus Laptop.  Should I encourage her to upgrade that to Windows 8.1 or should I tell her to stay with Windows 8?

Thanks for all of your insight.  I really do appreciate all ideas.

you will be to do a refresh but it will go back to windows 8.0. as the factory. If your really worried make the 16GB usb windows 8 system stick, in the Asus recovery first and then do the upgrade...
