I'm running Win 8.1 and almost always when I boot up, the little circular animation stops and the computer stops responding. I have to do a hard reset using the button on the PC. Normally the second time I have a successful boot. I've tried startup repairs and it hasn't helped.

I've also noticed several errors in the Event Viewer such as the one below:

Log Name:      System

Finally, I just started getting CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT errors and what I presume is the Windows 8 version of a blue screen.

Speccy log is here: http://1drv.ms/1k8tKnF

Not sure if they are all related or not. Would love some assistance. Thanks in advance.

Hi

Please publish your "Speccy" snapshot following https://www.piriform.com/docs/speccy/using-speccy/publishing-a-speccy-profile-to-the-web and post the web address with next reply.

copydi.png

Also copy and zip all the crash dump files inside "C:\Windows\Minidump" folder ( disable UAC to do that ) and upload with next reply. You can use 7-zip to create the archive which will be considerably smaller when compared with standard zip.

Also download and run "Minitoolbox" from the below link.

Run the tool and only select the following tick boxes.

List last 10 Event viewer errors
List installed program
List users, partition and memory size
List Minidumps

Now click "Go" and post the output displayed in next reply.

Hi

Please follow the below steps.

:step1: Update Chipset driver.

Please download and install version 13.2 of the AMD Chipset driver from the below link.

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/chipset?os=Windows+8+-+32

:step2: Update system BIOS.

Please download latest BIOS version from the below link.

http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socketAM2/M3A78-EM/M3A78-EM-ASUS-2701.zip

You should use Asus Ezflash tool from the BIOS setup to safely update the current version. Detailed instructions are covered in the official manual which can be downloaded from the below link.

Let me know whether it helps.

The link to the AMD chipset drivers shows version 13.12, is that what you meant?

Yes, that is the one you should install. Windows 8 fast startup is having some issues with your MoBo and HDD controller driver seems to crash on first boot. On subsequent reboots, fast startup will not be available so the BSOD will stop. Updating SATA controller driver by installing latest chipset driver and updating BIOS may improve Windows 8 compatibility of your system and might be able to fix issues with fast startup.

I downloaded the file from the link, but when I ran it, it did not say anything about a chipset update. It mentioned graphics drivers. Here is another Speccy snapshot to compare to see if anything changed. http://speccy.piriform.com/results/1rnhGLtbx12jRiJ2WrQm2y4

Other than the BIOS, which I successfully updated, I don't see any Mobo changes, do you?

Hi

Are you sure you downloaded the 49.7 MB sized chipset driver ? ( check the attachment). If yes, that is the right one.

Have had BSOD since updating the driver ?.

Yes, that's the one I installed. No BSOD's since and I did a fresh boot, not a re-start, and it did not hang. I'll continue to monitor. Thanks so much for your help!

Been a few days now and no BSOD's or startup issues. However, while checking event logs, I noticed I am still getting the \Device\Harddisk4\DR4 errors as I had posted in my initial post. Any thoughts?

Usually those are caused by either the SATA controller driver or contact issues between HDD and MoBo. Since we already installed the latest chipset driver which includes AMD SATA drivers, i would recommend replacing the SATA cable with a good quality one. Also reset the power connector.

So things had been ok since my last post until the other day. I started getting the CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT error. I did not see any of the  \Device\Harddisk4\DR4 errors in event log.

The computer starts, runs for about 5-10 minutes and then the screen freezez, usually followed by the BSOD. I've updated the chipset drivers to the most recent: drivers from AMD (rev 14.4  4/25/14) and replaced the SATA cable to the HDD. I'm not seeing and of the \Device\Harddisk4\DR4 errors in event log either.

Here is a link to the latest from Speccy: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/vHtzLIiMHu6at37khcgv2Se

Thanks in advance/

Brian
