Hello,

Windows XP3 running slow and programs loading including net slow.

I was trying to run MWB with chameleon. Chameleon was able to update the definitions but after update showed error that file corrupt and need to download/reinstall. I tried again, and same message.

I then ran the RogueKiller V8.5.2. I know the version looks to be a bit out of date, but this is all I had at the time. Needing to use another system for now.

The RogueKiller V8.5.2 found items in the registy and many items in the drivers section. Funny that the entire list in the drivers section did not populate. I remember seeing at least 20 listed.

For good measure I also include a OTL Report below. I should point out that I did not remove any items in the RogueKiller log. I will wait for your help.

Ah, the ESET online scanner you will see in the log was from a long ago scan - nothing that has been used in a very long time. We now use the Avast but did not run. Looks to be disabled.

I thank you for taking time to help.

Hello Nasdaq. Thank you for helping. The results from the logs are below.

A few comments/questions as you review the results.

- According to the fixlog it looks as if it did not find one of the .dll items.

- Does the fixlist.txt automatically remove itself from the FRST folder once the 'fix' button is selected. If so, great. If not, that's exactly what occurred. The only other item in the folder besides the FRST.ext is the fixlog results.

If you look at the command this whole line would normally be removed.
FF Plugin: @java.com/DTPlugin,version=10.9.2 - C:\WINDOWS\system32\npDeployJava1.dll No File

In your situation the file was already removed. Only the registry entry was removed.

Yes, the file should be run only once.

Please consider using these ideas to help secure your computer. While there is no way to guarantee safety when you use a computer, these steps will make it much less likely that you will need to endure another infection. While we really like to help people, we would rather help you protect yourself so that you won't need that help in the future.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates or get into the habit of checking Windows Update regularly. They usually have security updates every month. You can set Windows to notify you of Updates so that you can choose, but only do this if you believe you are able to understand which ones are needed. This is a crucial security measure.

Having an effective antivirus is a must for everyone.
In addition to many excellent commercial products there are plenty of good free antivirus programs available. I can recommend:

If you are satisfied with your current protection programs you can ignore the instructions on Antivirus or Firewall listed below. In addition to an antivirus I recommend using a firewall. A software firewall is a software program that helps screen out hackers, viruses, and worms that try to reach your computer over the Internet. I can recommend one of the following free products:Please note: Many installer offer third-party downloads that are installed automatically when you do not uncheck certain checkboxes. While most of the time not being malicious you usually do not want these on your computer. Be careful during the installation process and you will avoid seeing tons of new unwanted toolbars in your favorite web browser.

Please consider installing and running some of the following programs; they are either free or have free versions of commercial programs:

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM)
The free version of MBAM can be used to scan the system for traces of malware. Scanning your system regularly will make it harder for malware to reside on your system.
A tutorial on using MBAM can be found here.
Please Note: Only the paid for version has real time capabilities.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent malware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

Please keep these programs up-to-date and run them whenever you suspect a problem to prevent malware problems. A number of programs have resident protection and it is a good idea to run the resident protection of one of each type of program to maintain protection. However, it is important to run only one resident program of each type since they can conflict and become less effective. That means only one antivirus, firewall and scanning anti-spyware program at a time. Passive protectors, like SpywareBlaster can be run with any of them.

Note that there are a lot of rogue programs out there that want to scare you into giving them your money and some malware actually claims to be security programs. If you get a popup for a security program that you did not install yourself, do NOT click on it and ask for help immediately. It is very important to run an antivirus and firewall, but you can't always rely on reviews and ads for information. Ask in a security forum that you trust if you are not sure. If you are unsure and looking for anti-spyware programs, you can find out if it is a rogue here:A similar category of programs is now called "scareware." Scareware programs are active infections that will pop-up on your computer and tell you that you are infected. If you look closely, it will usually have a name that looks like it might be legitimate, but it is NOT one of the programs you installed. It tells you to click and install it right away. If you click on any part of it, including the 'X' to close it, you may actually help it infect your computer further. Keeping protection updated and running resident protection can help prevent these infections. If it happens anyway, get offline as quickly as you can. Pull the internet connection cable or shut down the computer if you have to. Contact someone to help by using another computer if possible. These programs are also sometimes called 'rogues', but they are different than the older version of rogues mentioned above.

Please keep your programs up to date. This applies to Java, Adobe Flashplayer, Adobe Reader and your Internet Browsers in particular. Vulnerabilities in these programs are often exploited in order to install malware on your PC. Visiting a prepared web page suffices to infect your system.

In general Firefox, Opera and Google Chrome are considered to be more secure than Internet Explorer. In addition there are many useful add-ons that can protect you from possible risks:
  • WOT will warn you when you try to visit sites with poor reputation. The reputation is based on user ratings and is usually very accurate.
  • Script Blocker can help blocking many attempts to infect your system via malicious websites by only allowing scripts at sites you trust.
  • NoScript is a popular Firefox addon,
  • ScriptNo a popular Google Chrome addon.
For much more useful information, please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How did I get infected in the first place

Hopefully these steps will help to keep you error free. If you run into more difficulty, we will certainly do what we can to help.

Hello Nasdaq. Thank you for answering my posting. It doesn't look like I have the latest flash. What is the best way to remove the old and install the new? How do I make certain that my antivirus is not disabled and is running properly? I am currently running (well before the issue) MBAM - basic version. Do I need to uninstall and reinstall a fresh copy since it was asking me to reinstall updates even through chameleon? What do you suggest to make sure nothing is left over from the uninstall? Any specific program here? Thank you.

Go to the Flash test site:
http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
Install the new version or if you have the latest close the windows.

The old version should be removed.
Check the Add/Remove Programs list to ensure that your have only one version. Delete the older one is present.

Run the Security Check and look at was is reported in the first section.

This is what you had in the previous scan.

When prompted to update please do.

Replace xxxname with the program you wish to removed.

Totally uninstall [xxxname], using the Revo Uninstaller.

Download and run the free version of Revo Uninstaller.

Select [xxxname] and click Uninstall.

Set it to 'Advanced' and click Scan.

Revo will do this:

Step 1. Create restore point.

Step 2. Run the official [xxxname] uninstaller.

Step 3. When uninstaller finishes, click Scan in Revo and it will search for remnants. Delete everything found (Select All, Delete All).

Reboot if asked.

hello nasdaq. thank you for holding on as we work through the directions. I was able to check the flash and update to the latest version. Is it best to have uninstalled with the uninstaller and reinstalled fresh? Should be always be running flash and java or have is disabled or selected to use as needed?

The program segments that I was looking to remove, were from an older program that was originally uninstalled using the add/remove programs uninstaller. However it looks as if there are some items left over. So I am not sure the revo would work for this?

I also uninstalled the Malwarebytes because I could not get it to run and reinstalled again. It look very long time to run through, but it did its job.

Should I run any of the programs that we had earlier in the postings, to make certain the system is clean since we did not work on this daily do to the power. The results did not find anything

The computer is running about the same.

I was reading through your posting with all the links and you should a few options for antivirus, do you think the Avast works well?

Now that I am back will check back often.

Thank you for your help and again sorry for the delay.

After an update flash will normally remove the old version.
You can always check the Add/Remove programs list and delete the old version is still present.

For flash and java select to use as needed or disable them.
You will know when flash is required. Java is mostly used for games.

The program segments that I was looking to remove, were from an older program that was originally uninstalled using the add/remove programs uninstaller. However it looks as if there are some items left over. So I am not sure the revo would work for this?

Run the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool one more time.
Post the log and let me know what you think should be removed.
===

I was reading through your posting with all the links and you should a few options for antivirus, do you think the Avast works well?

AVG or AVAST are both very good.

If you decide to change you will have to remove AVG using their uninstaller tool.
Please download the AVG Remover tools and Save it to your Desktop.
Select the tool that meets your operating system ( 32 or 64 bit) and the version of your AVG version installed.
  • Close all programs and double-click AVG removal tool then click Run
  • In Vista/Win7, right-click and choose 'Run as administrator'.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Restart your computer if asked.
  • Then delete AVG Removal tool from your desktop.
===

The if you install AVAST, the free version I suggest you will have to run the AdwCleaner tool to remove any 3rd party programs that comes with the installation.

hello nasdaq. Below you will find the updated FRST logs. Note that I had 3 issues prior to running the frst log.  Flash was a corrupt file, so I had to uninstall and reinstall manually. Now it looks to be okay. The second is when I was running avast it took nearly 2 hours to run through a basic scan. And 3rd on the frst log I see links to a site called speedbit and dap. From what I understand they were left over from an old program a long time ago when we had used it to download from a dialup if we lost a connection. We no longer use this and somehow it has reappeared. I tried using the revo but it does not find this.  As I am writing this post, I noticed the avast is once again disabled. By the way, I also saw in your last post mention AVG, we have Avast, not AVG.

here are logs. thank you.

Hello nasdaq.

I ran the FRSTfix for FRST (log pasted below.)

I also disabled the HKLM\...\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] - %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k.

I did create a restore point using the WinXP directions.

However I am having a challenge to work through the Tweaking.com - Windows Repair program. I was able to launch the Tweaking.com - Windows Repair program and select the options you had posted, but the Reset Registry Permissions and Reset File Permissions were taking a very long time. Running the prorgram for over 2 hours for only 10% completed for Step 2. I had stopped the program to report this to you and to maybe see what other options we have. It seems as if the program was resetting all registry and file permissions at a snails pace. I think it got up to 6550 at that point with a few  failed. Is there a log I can get for you?

Lastly, Avast is disabled but I do see it running as a process - something that I have tried to disable but I am unable to. Maybe this is also causing the delay as noted in the tweaking program to make sure to disable all antivirus programs.

I look for your next direction. Thank you for your help.
