External hard drive issues - file not found

My external hard drive has been acting weird lately.  I get on today and the folders appear.  The files in the root directory appear.  But when I click on any folder I get "This folder is empty".  Thing is, it isn't empty.

If I right-click/properties on a folder it shows nothing.  If I right-click/properties on the whole drive it shows the number of files and free space.

I can list directories and files in the DOS prompt.  They're there.  I cannot copy files via the DOS prompt to another disk or location.

Edit:  I have checked that the setting are set to have all files viewable.  Also, this is not happening with any of my other drives, internal or external.

Where do I start?

Thanks.

I restarted the computer and now it won't even recognize the hard drive.  Not even at the DOS prompt.

Is the external drive on enclosure or a portable hard drive? Have you tried a different PC or USB port or rebooting the computer host itself and replugging it again?
