I am not sure if I can get help here but I wanted to try. Here is my problem, I have a new laptop and a new printer. They both talk to the router but dont talk to each other. I have tried to connect them wirelessly every which way possible. I have not had any connection issues on my laptop and neither have any other devices connected to the router. Here what I can do, I can connect both laptop and printer to the router and both can talk to the router. I can only talk to the printer if my laptop is connected with an ethernet cable to the router and even then I only access the printer via its ip address but printing is still not possible. I can connect the printer directly to the computer to print so I know that works ok.

Thanks for reading this. You are my last hope. I am well past my 90 days netgear phone/chat support and they wanted to charge $199.99 for 2 year tech support on all my digital devices or $79.99 for 6 months of service. If I cant get help here does anyone have any suggestions on other forums I can ask for help in or search for similar issues in?

is it always using it's wireless print server? or do you mean when your PC is on wifi it doesn't find it? but when plugged in it finds it but still won't print?

Did it find it when you first installed it? either connection

That's right, when the pc is plugged in I can detect it. To get to that point I first plug everything in with ethernet cables the first thing I do is reset the network settings on the printer and uninstall the printer from my pc. Then I plug everything in and find the assigned ip address  for the printer usually 192.168.1.6(when plugged in) Then I change/configure the settings on the printer for WLAN and it connects with a new ip adress of 192.168.1.8. Once it reboots and I unplug the ethernet cable from the back of the printer I can still get into the printers settings page but it still does not print. I did try and change/configure the port settings. Would I be able to make the set up any easier if I install on the other pc in regularly in use it runs Vista Home premium. I also have a wireless bridge I could put back into use, could I set up the wireles bridge and then just plug the printer into it.

Having a wi-fi capable printer myself, the following may be helpful and hopefully relevant in this situation.

When I first got bought the printer ( a Canon by the way), I installed the software and connected it via USB - no problem.

When I decided to try to connect via wi-fi, I knew I had to go through the add printer routine so that my computer shows that I have 2 printers - 1 with a USB connection and 1 with a wi-fi connection.  However it took me a while to work out that the wireless connection module in the software is not installed by default when the printer is connected via cable, so I had to re-run the installation package to install that module - after that no problem.

Getting back to the problem here,  I think the printer needs to be added a total of three times, each with its own settings - 1 for USB, 1 for Ethernet and 1 for wi-fi.  Then you will be able to connect whichever way you want.

I'll try adding it 3 times I have had it installed with either usb+wireless or ethernet+wireless but not all 3. It can't hurt to try.

At any point if you get stuck or an error or anything like that, stop and let us know at what point and what error.

First thing - I want you to pick one way for that printer to connect. Don't care which but pick one and leave it that way no matter what.

Second thing - I want you to completely remove all traces of the printer off your PC(s). Delete the printer in printers and remove the software completely, including if you downloaded the install files...all of it gone.

Third - (skip this if you are connecting printer directly and sharing it) Pick a static IP address for your printer in the area you're connecting, wired or wireless. If your router starts handing out IP addresses low(which yours seems to) then pick a higher number. What I mean is your router's IP address is probably 192.168.1.1 and since you said your printer normally gets 192.168.1.6 or 8 then for a static IP pick something like 25 or whatever number you want up to 254, just remember it and use the subnet mask 255.255.255.0, if you have to enter that in the printer. Also, if you decide to stick with wireless make sure the pass code for the security is correct.

Fourth - unplug the printer and plug it back in make sure it connects. There should be a light to indicate it is connected. To test it ping the IP address or see if you can surf into it. If you can't do either, it may not be connected. My assumption is that you are connecting wireless. So start with the IP making sure the settings took and then the pass code is 100% correct. Once you can ping it or surf into the server move on.

Fifth - Go here http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public/us/us/en/dlf/download_top.html?reg=us&c=us&lang=en&prod=hl2280dw_us pick the OS, language and click Search on the next page pick the full package.

Sixth - Run it and follow the instructions in the quick start up guide. Don't do the "Before you begin" part and use guide A, using a USB cable. I say that because you have a laptop so it's easy to move around. I could write out all the steps but you have the guide and if you follow each step and don't skip ahead it will work.

Something somewhere has gotten messed up so you just need to start over. I'm 100% positive that it will work for you if you take your time and do each step. People WAY smarter than me have come up with the instructions and guides.

OMG it works now! I will edit/repost the solution later today as I got to get to work and should have been in the shower quite a while ago. sorry for thew "tmi" thanks so much CaveDweller2
Edit:
I reset my router completely. I did notice that a few settings changed back. the one I am sure helped was the network isolation button was no longer checked. I feel pretty stupid as I must have been the one that changed that setting thanks again
