I am running Windows 7 sp on an Aspire One D270 netbook. I got BSOD a week ago but it happened twice yesterday and again today. The only thing I csn catch is IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL but I have turned off the automatic restart now so I should be able to catch it all if it happens again.

It seems to happen most when I am running Apache Open Office and working online at the same time, but the first few times it happened this wasn't the case. I don't really have any idea what I am doing!

I have run the memory diagnostics tool and that was fine, I've run Spybot and Avast full scans and they were fine. I have used forums to work out how to use the event viewer but beyond that I haven't a clue. I have copied all the warning and error messages from the time of the last blue screen, but there are so many events listed that I'm not sure what I need to be looking at.

I am trying to finish my coursework for a qualification that is supposed to be completed by the end of March and I definitely can't afford to replace my computer or buy new software so I am really panicking now, all advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have also made sure all my Windows updates are completed so everything should be up to date!

Hi Cathy,

Please download BlueScreenView. If you download the appropriate zip file you will not need to install the software.

Extract the files and run BlueScreenView.exe

When the program window opens, select Edit > Select All

Then File > Save Selected Items

Save the report as BlueScreen.txt.  Open the file in Notepad and copy & paste all the contents in your next post.

Please download MiniToolBox to your Desktop and run it.

Check mark the following boxes:

  • List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices – Only Problems
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
  • List Minidump Files
  • List Restore Points

Click Go and copy/paste the log (Result.txt) into your next post.

Please download and run Speccy.  Once the scan has completed:

  1. Click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.
  2. In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.
  3. Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot dialog box.  Copy the URL to the clipboard, and paste it in your next post.

Do the drivers not update automatically with the Windows updates? How would I go about doing that? Downloading Speccy now....

It seems to happen most when I am running Apache Open Office and working online at the same time, but the first few times it happened this wasn't the case. I don't really have any idea what I am doing!

Probably it will be the "utorrent" which is causing issues for you. Please uninstall it as a test and let me know whether the BSOD stops.

Utorrent isn't usually running, I only started it last night and the BSOD definitely started first. Also, I have run uTorrent lots of times on this computer and it's never caused a problem before. I only have it running when I am downloading a file and close it immediately because it uses so much memory and my computer's slow at the best of times!

Hi,

The Speccy report shows that you have Avast Antivirus installed and running, and there are also elements of McAfee Internet Security running.  Have you recently uninstalled McAfee and installed Avast?

I have just installed Avast because my Norton subscription ran out and I didn't think it was worth paying for again. I must have had McAfee before that. Could this be causing the problem? How do I remove those last traces and why weren't they removed when I uninstalled it or by CCleaner since then?

McAfee can be difficult to completely remove and having the two products running at the same time is a potential cause of problems.  Please download MCPR (McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool) to your desktop and run it.  That should remove the remnants of McAfee.

From the Speccy report your network and chipset drivers seem to be up-to-date, however there is a BIOS update available for your system.

Updating BIOS looks a bit scary, are there any simple instructions you can recommend so I don't do any damage? I'm about to run the MCPR. Are these likely to fix my computer?

The McAfee removal tool wouldn't complete installation, it  says "timeout, no response from mccleanup.exe" and when I pressed close it opened an untitled notepad file that says "the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process".
