Posted 27 February 2014 - 10:15 PM

Slow start up, sometimes freezing, delayed/stuttering folder/file/program opening sometimes not opening at all requiriing a full reboot. It has taken as long as 10-15' to boot up and the desktop appear and be usable. There were early on browser redirects but these seem to have stopped. There have been no blue or black crash screens, just basically complete freeze ups. HELP!  thank you in advance

Hello again,

Something's not right with this one, and I'm hoping it's not a possible hardware failure.

Your description of the problem doesn't sound good, and the DDS scan wasn't able to read the drivers properly, so I'm going to move over to OTL for another log.

Since it's been a while that you were dealing with this, the normal scanners won't look at files/folders created or modified older than 30 days, so we'll have to tweak our scans a bit. Do you remember when the problem first started happening? We'll need to enter this in the OTL interface to get a more accurate log:

We need to create a New FULL OTL Report

  • Please download OTL from the mirror below:
  • Main Mirror
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the otlicon.png icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Change the "Extra Registry" option to "SafeList"
  • And in the "File Scan"'s box, click the "File Age" dropdown arrow and select 90 Days (or the closest time when you remember this problem beginning to occur!...this is where we need to choose the right time frame, or we may not get to see all the relevant information in the logs!).
  • Push the runscan.png button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
  • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
  • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized

Hello again, and sorry for the delay!

I should be able to get back to you tomorrow (Saturday...you should be in the same time zone as I am).

My apologies!

Hello again, and thanks for your patience! :)

Well, I need to warn you about my first thought about the problem...your machine has very little Random Access Memory and fixing that could be a decision problem. This goes by the acronym "RAM" nowadays.

From both of your logs:

446.62
446.42 Mb Total Physical Memory | 61.24 Mb Available Physical Memory | 13.72% Memory free

I had seen it in your DDS log but I wanted some re-assurance since it didn't look accurate, and that's the other reason I asked for the OTL log.

Your machine has only 512Mb of RAM, and there is only about 60 Mb available when it's running! If you try to do any memory hogging tasks, the machine might seem like it lock's up because there is no available RAM to use. You might see a "Low Virtual Memory" warning in the taskbar sometimes because of this as well.

Running modern programs on an outdated platform will sometimes seem like there's something wrong...and there is...not enough RAM to run programs and your computer must slow down significantly, waiting for the old hardware to catch up.

It makes the machine slow to startup, and slow to run. The fastest, cheapest, and most immediately noticeable upgrade for your computer, would be a RAM upgrade if your machine can handle it.

==========

Now, I'd like you to run one more scan to be sure there isn't a rootkit slowing the machine down even more than it normally is:
  • Please download TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop
  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then click on Change parameters

    tds2.jpg
  • Check Loaded Modules, Verify Driver Digital Signature, and Detect TDLFS file system
  • If you are asked to reboot because an "Extended Monitoring Driver is required" please click Reboot now

    2012081514h0118.png
  • Once the system reboots, and you see the Kaspersky TDSSKiller window again. Please click "Change Parameters" again, and make sure all boxes are checkboxed!
  • Click Start Scan and allow the scan process to run

    tds4-1.jpg
  • If threats are detected select Skip or Cure (if available) for all of them unless otherwise instructed.
    ***Do NOT select Delete!
  • Click Continue

    tds6.jpg
  • Click Reboot computer
  • Please copy the TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt file found in your root directory (typically c:\) and paste it into your next reply

OK will do. Thats strange- we bought this machine in 2010 and and I believed there to be a min of 1gb of RAM. Can easily upgrade that if so

Ok not sure if I did this correctly. Opened the parameters and chkd all indicated boxes. The machine did reboot and ran scan did not appear to produce a log. No threats were found

In addition to the TDSSKiller log, please let me know the system manufacturer and model number!

Is there any change to the machine's behaviour after the running of this tool?

EDIT: The TDSSKiller log should be located in the C:\ drive with a name like TDSSKiller.[Version]_[date]_[time]_log.txt

Hello again,

Again, sorry for the delay!

If you have it, please post the TDSSKiller log so I can check some of the files...if not, we'll use another tool.

==========

About the system's memory, I've had a look at this page and it shows your machine has 4 slots and can hold up to 4Gb of RAM.

Your logs aren't showing 1GB of RAM, they're only showing half of that...and that could make a big difference.

Are you familiar with opening the case of the machine and checking the RAM chips to see what is actually there? Would you know what you are looking for if you did open the machine?

Finally, would you like me to guide you on this, or would you rather not explore the interior of the machine?

==========

I know you're not very good at answering questions you've been asked (I know this by looking at many of your previous threads here at BC, and at ComputerHope as well  ), but I'm hoping you'll answer my questions here as they're pretty important.

If you'd rather not open the machine and you just want me to give you a script and some other things to try, then that's fine also, just let me know what you'd like to do with this machine.
