I would like to extend my display from the computer to the TV using HDMI cables. However, when I go  to Control Panel> Appearance and Personalization>Display>Adjust screen resolution>Detect...nothing happens, the second screen is not detected. What I am getting is:

1) The Desktop background with icons and the cursor on the television

2) On the computer I get Desktop background only, no icons, no cursor and therefore no control

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Display
click 'connect to a projector' on the left side-bar

anything useful about this?

check the RELATED RESOURCES at the bottom too.

if these did not work, use google as:

Ok, here's my situation/problem. This problems occurs while I was trying to set up the worship media at my church. On Sunday last, when I got home I tried to repeat the process, ie, I would like to extend my display from the computer to the TV using HDMI cables. But my TV at home has no HDMI outlet only VGA. Guess what it worked. I am puzzled now!! Is it the HDMI cables? I doubt that because I am able to transmit to the TV.

i am no sleuth in solving mysteries :P but i guess i reconstructed your incident in my laptop, and found out the reason. winkey + P has 4 options. 'computer only' is what everyone uses regularly. 'projector only' swaps the display from our computer monitor to the projector, while the monitor displays only the desktop wallpaper (your incident). 'extend' shares what needs to be displayed as two equal halves. 'duplicate' replicates what is on the monitor to the projector. [all these under the case that you have ONE display ie., TV in addition to the monitor. so what you need to do is choose either extend, or duplicate as per your needs. more info at:

check this and let me know if that worked :)

I understand the concept quite well and I chose the required option, ie, extend and it still hasn't worked
