My PC was infected by a virus yesterday. It shut down my anti virus software and firewall and did who knows what! I restarted my anti virus software and scanned my system. After a couple of hours (PC was very slow) 3 viruses were detected and deleted. I also ran spybot s&d and spyware doctor, which removed around 55 spyware processes.

I thought I'd removed eveything, but it appears not. Today I was infected again by the file klo5.sys. Now I cannot get rid of the file klo5.sys from my C:\WINDWOS\System32 dir. When I delete the file a warning message pops up and basically says my comp is infected - I must reboot. Of course the file klo5.sys is back in the System32 dir when Win has loaded.

I've searched Google for klo5.sys, which has returend a few results, some of which I've tried like rebooting and running win repair, creating temp dir, move klo5.sys to temp dir, delete from system32 dir, and exit, restart -- no good. <_<

Other things I've tried include downloading various software like killbox and VundoFix, but I still can't get rid of this damn klo5.sys file.

It's obvious to me that there is a process running somewhere, which is continually loading the klo5.sys file on start up, but I haven't a clue what it is.

Here is my hijackthis log:

Hello,

I guess you are dealing with a new variant of haxdoor.
But first we have to clean up a bit more first before we deal with it, because there are also a lot of other infections present.

I see you have HackerSmacker Firewall installed. I do not recommend this one. In case you didn't buy it, I suggest you uninstall it.

* Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
Don't use it yet.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZPoint] C:\WINDOWS\system32\winmuse.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: dvb03a - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dvb03a.dll

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
* Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; I need that log afterwards.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Download haxfix.exe.
Save it to your desktop.
Double click on haxfix.exe to install haxfix. (standard installation path is c:\program Files\haxfix)
Checkmark "Create a desktop icon".
Click "Next".
When the installation is completed, make sure that the checkmark "Launch HaxFix" is placed.
Click "Finish".
A red "dos window" (dos box) will open.
Select option 1. Make logfile by typing 1 and then pressing Enter.
Haxfix will start scanning the computer. When it is finished a logfile will open.
Copy the contents of that logfile and paste it into this thread together with the log from smitfraudfix (rapport.txt present on your C:\) and a new hijackthislog.

Extra instruction..

Can you also perform next please?

Download the Registry Search Tool.
http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/
Unzip it and run it.
If your antivirus interferes, you have to disable script blocking in the antivirus.
Put the following in the search box:

dvb0

Post the results also in your next reply.

Then, *Please download the Suspicious File Packer from here:
http://www.safer-networking.org/files/sfp.zip
Unzip it to the desktop and run it.

Paste the following file path into the Suspicious File Packer window:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dvb03a.dll

Allow SFP to pack the file. This will generate a CAB archive on your desktop. Please email the file to:

miekiemoesATmalware-research.co.uk

remember to replace the AT in the above line with an @
(the reason to not post a complete valid e-mail address in a post is so spammers can't harvest the addresses)

Hi - I've been trying for ages to reply to this topic but since completing your suggestions my computer has been crazy. I can copy and paste the logs into this reply, but if I do I can't submit. If I don't copy and paste anything then I can submit! I've been unable to reply to your email. as well.

I've completed everything you have suggested though.

Ok,

Now I have what I need.

Can you uninstall the current haxfix please?
Go to start > controlpanel > software > add/remove programs, search in the list for haxfix and click to uninstall.
This is really important!

Then I want you to download this version - it's been updated:

http://users.telenet.be/marcvn/temp/haxfix.exe

Save it to your desktop.
Double click on haxfix.exe to install haxfix. (standard installation path is c:\program Files\haxfix)
Checkmark "Create a desktop icon".
Click "Next".
When the installation is completed, make sure that the checkmark "Launch HaxFix" is placed.
Click "Finish".
A red "dos window" (dos box) will open.
Select option 1. Make logfile by typing 1 and then pressing Enter.
Haxfix will start scanning the computer. When it is finished a logfile will open.

Post it in your next reply.. or upload it.

Ok..

Open this folder program files\haxfix and double click on fix.bat (or double click on fix.bat desktop icon)
Close all other open windows since this step requires a reboot.

Select option 2. Run auto fix by typing 2, and then pressing Enter.
If an infection is found, you'll get a message to close all other open windows.
Close them, except the red dos window from haxfix and then press Enter.
The computer will reboot.
After reboot a logfile will open.
Post the contents of that logfile along with a new hijackthislog.
