Windows 7 64 bit - Consistent freezing after 60-90 minutes

Hi!

 

I've been having an obnoxious problem for roughly 10 days. My computer starts up and runs for anywhere between 60-90 seconds, and then completely locks up. No BSOD, but completely non-responsive. Mouse locks up, etc etc. I have to hard reset.

 

I ran a memtest and had over 300 errors come back, so I ordered new RAM and replaced the old with brand new Corsair 1600 Mhz. Still freezes.

 

I ran Norton and Spybot, and detected no malware or viruses. Still freezes.

 

I downloaded a shell extension program and eliminated all non-essential shell extensions. Still freezes.

 

I uninstalled several programs that I had installed prior to the freezing issue. Still freezes.

 

Things I did around the same time this started freezing: 

Downloaded latest windows 7 update (can't system restore to before this time - I tried and file doesn't exist).

Downloaded full Adobe Creative Suite

Connected and downloaded software for Razer Naga mouse

 

I'm about to resort to re-installing windows, but I really don't want to have to do that.

 

Does anyone have any advice?

Try a different mouse to eliminate the possibility that the mouse is causing the freezing.

Donna,

 

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I tried a different mouse and had another crash. 

Additional details: sometimes it freezes (90% of the time) but every once in a while (10%) windows itself crashes, leaving my desktop but nothing else.

 

Thanks for any ideas!

Try safemode with networking then check the difference. Please post the PSU model, brand and wattage next time.

I have a CORSAIR Professional Series HX850 (CMPSU-850HX) 850W Power Supply.

Safemode with networking seems to prevent freezing altogether. I guess that means it's not the default windows drivers and setup. 

I've thought of a few more details:

Whenever my computer goes to sleep, it crashes as well - no BSOD, no freeze, just directly to a "can't boot" screen. Very strange. I disabled sleeping a week ago to prevent it but thought this might provide some additional information.

Also, I deleted my hiberfil.sys to make more room on my SSD around the same time these freezes/crashes started.

One more update - I DID have a freeze while running safemode with networking. 

 

Does this mean I need to re-install windows, or are there other diagnostics I can try?

It can't hurt using your windows disk using the R feature that will preserve your files, but give the post a little more time there are some fine minds out there!

Try downloading Speccy and then install the program.  To post and publish a snapshot of your PC.
. In the Menu bar, click File -> Publish Snapshot
. Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard
. On your next reply, right-click on a empty space and click Paste on reply box then click Post.

 

Download MiniToolBox and run the program. Select
List Last 10 Event Viewers, List Installed Programs and List Users, Partitions and Memory Size then click Go.
A notepad will open then copy-paste the report on your next reply.

Use this steps below accordingly then check the freezing problems. Proceed with the next step if it still occurs.

 

:step1: Please remove spybot completely from your system.

 

:step2: Install the latest video driver version 13.12 from the support site. Use the custom - clean install option.

:step3: Update your motherboard BIOS version to the latest release firmware from MSI site and read carefully the instructions.

:step4: Check for firmware updates for your Crucial SSD or launch the update utility.

Jhayz,

 

Thank you for the directions. I have removed spybot and experienced a freeze, so I am moving to step 2. I will respond when it is fixed or when I have exhausted the steps.
