My son is back from University with his laptop. He said he had some problems with his computer ;-)
He sure has... I am trying to get rid of SurfSideKick and would appreciate your help.

I followed the recommended procedures (from topic34773 on this site) and I can now post the HJT log:

Hello,

You posted the startuplist from hijackthis. I actually need a normal hijackthislog.

Anyway, perform next first..

Go to start > controlpanel > software > add/remove programs and look if Surfsidekick is listed there and uninstall it.
Follow the prompts during the uninstallsession and reboot afterwards.

When surfsidekick is not listed there, perform next..

Open start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

"C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe" /u

Click ok.

It will open a new window and ask you to enter a code you'll find in the same window. Please do so.
Then reboot.

Post a normal hijackthislog after performing above steps in your next reply.

Thanks. I am replying from another computer while the infected PC is rebooting.

1- "start > controlpanel > software > add/remove programs " : SurfSideKick does not appear there.

2- I did run "C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe" /u. I entered the code and rebooted.

While rebooting, a "Windows Installer" window appeared twice (I don't know why, neither if it is related to Sur5fSideKick or not).

Now how do I get a "normal hijackthislog"? When I open Hijackthis, I go direcly to the program window, with the Scan & fix stuff on the left lower hand, and the Other stuf to the right.

To get a normal hijackthislog, click scan and then the scan button will change into save log. Click the save log button and the log will open.

Hello,

Looks like surfsidekick is gone.
Now some leftovers..

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {02EE5B04-F144-47BB-83FB-A60BD91B74A9} - (no file)
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
<== this is a resource hog
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Then delete next folder if still present:

C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3

*Go to start >run and type: services.msc and click OK
Scroll down in that list until you find the service windows kernel 386
Doubleclick on it. In the window that will appear, click on "Stop" (if not greyed out) and change the Startup Type to disabled.
Click apply and OK
Perform the same for next services:

Gestionnaire de disque logique
Gestion d'applications

Make sure those are exact the same services and not similar looking ones!

Then, open hijackthis again and click the 'config' button (botton right)
Then click the 'Misc Tools' button.
Click the 'Delete an NT service' button.
A small window will open and in the field, copy and paste next: windows kernel and click ok.

Reboot and post a new hijackthislog in your next reply.

Hi,

And I see a clean hijackthislog.

Glad I could help.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Thanks again Mieke.
This donation is a small token of my appreciation.

You suggest installing Spywareblaster. I already installed and run Spybot SD-resident (Tea Timer). Should I replace it with Spywareblaster or run both at the same time? What is the difference between the two?

Hi, thanks for the donation, much aprreciated.

Spywareblaster is different than the 'normal' scanners we know. Spywareblaster doesn't really run in the background. It works in a different way. It adds 'killbits' in the registry to block bad ActiveX.
So yes, you can have Teatimer running in the background as well. You won't see spywareblaster running in the background, but it really does its job.
Also read here for more info about spywareblaster and how to configure it:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/use-spywareblaster-to-protect-your-computer/

Just make sure you update spywareblaster once a week. That's all you should do.
