After a HDD failure, I had to replace it and re-install Windows 7 with the disc I got from Dell. After it installed, I used the Dell driver disc and installed all the appropriate drivers. All seemed fine and dandy, until I closed my laptop and opened it later, ready to use it again. Sadly, within a minute of it waking from sleep after logging in, it completely hard froze, requiring me to hold the power button and restart. Thinking this was a fluke, I just used it after it re-booted and all went well. The next time I woke it from sleep, it froze again! The problem has persisted ever since. It doesn't freeze everytime after sleep, but it does freeze 8/10 times. I've googled everything, checked all my drivers, checked for errors in the logs, and nothing can pinpoint why it keeps freezing. If I shut it down and reboot it, it works perfectly and never freezes. Before the freeze, I can sometimes notice the computer slowing down and usually the taskbar freezes before anything else, then the whole system locks up. The most recent freeze came after it awoke from hibernation. The computer can just be sitting idle and it'll freeze but it can sit at the log in menu and never freeze. Any help would be appreciated. Specs are:

Dell Inspiron N4110 laptop

Intel Pentium B940 @ 2.00 GHz 2.00 GHz

4 GB RAM

64 Bit Windows 7

Internal HDD is a TOSHIBA MQ01ABD050 500GB at 5400 RPM

:welcome: to Bleeping Computer Ultra_Flare :)

Try downloading Speccy and then install the program.  To post and publish a snapshot of your PC.
. In the Menu bar, click File -> Publish Snapshot
. Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard
. On your next reply, right-click on a empty space and click Paste on reply box then click Post.
Note: Under Operating System, please remove or delete your license key or serial number.

Download MiniToolBox and run the program. Select
List Last 10 Event Viewers, List Installed Programs and List Users, Partitions and Memory Size then click Go.
A notepad will open then copy-paste the report on your next reply.

Since when your system has been running without a protection software? Install a free antivirus next time, Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast are known to be good and recommended including myself. There are some reallocated sectors count flag from your SMART hard drive readings on speccy report.

Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks that sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and reallocated sectors are called "remaps". The raw value normally represents a count of the bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate. This allows a drive with bad sectors to continue operation; however, a drive which has had any reallocations at all is significantly more likely to fail in the near future. While primarily used as a metric of the life expectancy of the drive, this number also affects performance. As the count of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to become worse because the drive head is forced to seek to the reserved area whenever a remap is accessed.

The last windows install was July 2013 so I would presume its only lately that the problem occurs. Please keep a current backup of your important data. Check all drivers are up to date. There is a newer BIOS version from Dell support site. Some contains patch or fix to certain issues. Try updating to the latest BIOS version. If the problem persist, a complete reinstall is the only solution but most likely the hard drive replacement is the main culprit.

I only recently uninstalled my antivirus as I thought it might be the culprit. According to Dell, all drivers are good. I'll get the latest BIOS update ASAP. Referring to the hard drive replacement, do you know why it would've caused this? Nothing went wrong in the installation as far as I now.

Well, just a heads up when purchasing a new drive with warranty, run a hard drive diagnostic first to check for the health status and alternately on different sessions which can be run in the background. There are Windows software versions much preferrable on newly installed drives and for unbootable operating systems are the DOS mode available on manufacturing support sites like Seagate/Samsung, WD, Toshiba, etc.. Third party softwares like HDTune trial/free and GSmartControl are also recommended and popular.

Common causes of hard drive failures Power management like sleep or hibernate requires RAM and a healthy hard drive to function properly and is only considered as one of the causes of sleep mode failures.
