I previously re-OS from Xp to Win 7.

I am having a couple of issues; don't know if related. 1st is my video or graphics I can't update because it says that "this machine does not support the device" It is a NVIDIA Ge Force.

I get a message & a message block that says something to the effect about "unresponsive script". I can either "stop script", or wait for it to continue. The browser is froze at that point.

The other issue, not knowing if related, is the machine will sometimes freeze & I have to do a hard shutdown. The machine will at times of being shutdown will go to the command prompt window & then I am prompted to either start up in safe or regular mode. I Start the machine in regular, then shut down regular.

It happens pretty often & I have to re-tab the browser, which is Mozilla.

Would there be any other recommended steps & preparations I should do with this machine?
Is there something I am missing?

The machine is a DELL Inspiron 1520; about a 2007.

Thanks.

Trying to load the speccy snap shot, but it won't do so. It says it is 16.3 size, but 20mb disk space?

Dell only produced video drivers for your laptop for XP and Vista.  Dell frequently customise the drivers so that the onboard video chip works properly with the rest of the motherboard components, so it's likely that a standard video driver from NVIDIA or one that came with Windows 7 will not work optimally and could be causing the system freeze problems that you are having.  It is possible that the Dell Vista video driver might work with Windows 7 but if you are going to try it I must strongly advise you to carry out a full system backup before doing so.

I have seen many reports recently about unresponsive script problems with Firefox and I have not seen a solution that works for everyone.  I get them myself soemtimes on a small number of websites, so it may be something to do with the way a website has been set up.  The headlong rush by some browser developers to be constantly updating their browsers may also be a factor - IMHO.

Thanks dis62.

Can't seem to get screen shots to download. Seems the files are too large or something?

With the Speccy snapshot 'publish' it and then paste the web link only in your post.

Please download MiniToolBox to your Desktop and run it.

Check mark the following boxes:

  • Flush DNS
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP Configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
  • List Devices – Only Problems

Click Go and copy/paste the log (Result.txt) into your next post.

Note: When using the "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option, Firefox should not be running.

In Firefox, go to Help > Troubleshooting Information and click on Copy text to clipboard.  Paste the text into a new post.

I see from the Speccy snapshot that you have the NVIDIA GeForce 327.23 drivers installed.  Which drivers are you trying to install?

dis62,

I am trying to install whatever drivers that will work for me. I have gotten update notices in the past, from NVIDIA GeForce. It seems it is a program that deals with video & audio? (I have no idea).
This machine is a Dell, that the company had loaded XP on, instead of Vista. It was a model that they had setup for those not wanting to change to VISTA, for the obvious reasons.
Fast forward & I also have ipad & Iphone. In order to sync with icloud (not quite working) I had to go with Win 7.
I ran the compatibility tests & it all went well. When I changed over to 7, then I went to update certain drives. When getting to this, NVIDIA, it said this machine "doesn't support"...
I do notice an invisible wave, that floats up horizontally on the screen at times; sort of weird...  If that means anything?

I am going to finish going through my inbox, then get on with the task you've sent me; thanks again.

Jeff

dis62,

I did as you instructed, to the reference to Firefox. I didn't see a physical 'clipboard'? But I went through the motions as you instructed, all the same.

dis62,

Where would the clipboard be in Firefox, if there is one?

In Firefox, on the Troubleshooting Information page there should be a button at the top left which says 'Copy text to clipboard'.  You would then just right click in a post to paste that text.  However, what you have posted has given me the information I was looking for.

The errors in the MiniToolbox log indicate that you might have some disk corruption problems, so please open an Explorer window, right click on your C: drive and select Properties.

Click on the Tools tab and in the Error checking section click on Check now.

Select both of the Check Disk options and click Start.  You will be asked to restart your system for the check to take place.

The errors could also be caused by faulty RAM, so please download a Memtest ISO and burn it to a CD.  Then restart your system from the CD and allow the test to run for at least 3 and preferably 5 complete passes.

Let me know the results of the tests in your next post.

Couldn't get 'me test ISO' to download, without purchasing win zip?

You do not need to purchase Winzip. Download memtest using the link provided by dls62. Download and install the free archiver 7zip. Doubleclick the zip file and extract the iso file.
