Norton AntiVirus identifies the following on my system:
Virus name: Trojan.LowZones - File: C:\_RESTORE\TEMP\A0999411.CPY
Virus name: Trojan Horse - Files: C:\_RESTORE\TEMP\PJ.0 C:\_RESTORE\TEMP\A1012955.CPY C:\_RESTORE\TEMP\A1013090.CPY C:\_RESTORE\TEMP\A1014248.CPY C:\_RESTORE\TEMP\A1014253.CPY

Ad-Aware SE Personal identifies the problems as BroadCastPC and BonziBuddy. It lists the following files it cannot remove (also failing to remove them in a re-boot scan, even in Safe mode): A0977315.1, A0978372.1, A0979555.1, A0980967.1, A0982024.1, A0999420.1, A0999531.1, A1000941.1, A1001998.1 and A1007213.1.

In step 5, I was only able to run Housecall Anti Virus. Neither Panda Anti Virus or Bit Defender would run. Previously, when Norton AnitVirus could not fix these issues, I tried to switch to McAfee (available to me for free as a Comcast customer). I could not get that to download - even with lengthy assistance from McAfee customer support. The issue there seemed to be with the ActiveX control, but nothing seemed to resolve it.

I have a NuTrend computer, running Window Me.

First of all, you will need to print out this post and/or save a copy as a text file in Notepad so that you have a hard copy of these instructions; you can not have IE/Firefox/any browser open during the fix

The files Norton is seeng are in system Restore..we'll clear those out after you are clean.

Download smitRem.exe ©noahdfear and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

You may have previously ran some of the following programs, please run through the fix and run all programs listed, in order, and make sure to update all

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to the following items Close all other windows and browsers and click FIX CHECKED

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Reboot back into Windows and scan your system with Ad-aware:

Ad-aware SE - Download - Home Page
If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware installed, during the installation of the new version you will be prompted to uninstall or keep the older version - be sure to uninstall the previous version.
After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run.
Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".
Once the definitions have been updated:

Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
  • Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.
  • Under General Settings the following boxes should all be checked off: (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is greyed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)
    • "Automatically save logfile"
    • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"
    • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
    • Prompt to update outdated confirmation) - Change to 7 days.
  • Click the "Scanning" button (On the left side).
  • Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives"
  • Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.
  • Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
  • Click the "Advanced" button (On the left hand side).
  • Under "Shell Integration", select "Move deleted files to Recycle Bin".
  • Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
  • Click on the "Defaults" button on the left.
  • Type in the full url of what you want as your default homepage and searchpage e.g. http://www.google.com.
  • Click the "Tweak" button (Again, on the left hand side).
  • Expand "Scanning Engine" by clicking on the "+" (Plus) symbol and select the following:
    • "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
    • "Obtain command line of scanned processes"
    • "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only"
  • Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
    • "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
    • "During removal, unload explorer and IE if necessary"
    • "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot."
    • "Delete quarantined objects after restoring"
  • Click on "Safety Settings" and select "Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)"
  • Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.
  • Click on the "Scan Now" button on the left.
  • Under "Select Scan Mode, be sure to select "Use Custom Scanning Options".
Close all programs except ad-aware.
Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.
After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.[/list]
Then run this online virus scan: ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    - Enter your Country
    - Enter your State/Province
    - Enter your e-mail address and click send(*NOTE it's perfectly safe to do so..You will NOT be spammed from this)
    - Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If/when you get a notice that Panda wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location like your desktop.
Post the contents
  • of the Panda scan report
  • a new HijackThis Log
  • smitfiles.txt
in a reply to this thread.

ALSO I see Viewpoint is installed.
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This had changed from what we knew ; read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

* Viewpoint
* Viewpoint Manager
* Viewpoint Media Player
Reboot afterwards.

I was able to uninstall Viewpoint Manager. There was no uninstall option for Viewpoint Media Player so I moved those files to the Recycle bin. They were deleted when I ran smitRem.

When running Ad-Aware, there was no option "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion." and the "During removal, unload explorer and IE if necessary." option was grayed out.

As before, I could not run the Panda ActiveScan, I just got a screen with possible errors and the chance to 'try again.'

Following, in order, are the latest HijackThis log and the smitfiles.txt file:

I was hoping you could get Panda to run after a little clean up...See if you can run Housecall by clicking HERE.
Once the page loads click the Scan Now. It's Free! Then choose your country from the list. Click the GO button. Now click on Complete Scan. You may get a box asking if you want to install and run a program from Trend. Choose Yes. Now check the box next to your hard drive from the list offered. Leave both boxes checked and click Next. Let it run. When it's done Save a copy of the report and post it back here along with a UninstallList

To get an Uninstall List from HijackThis:
  • Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
  • Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

I could run Housecall, but not the way you described. I wasn't asked to enter a country, I don't remember a GO button. Along the way there was an option for a full computer scan, so I chose that. There was no offer to install & run a program after that, no list or box to check to indicate my hard drive. I did the scan that I could. The results would appear on screen, but I found no way to copy them and paste them here (which seemed really strange), so I wrote down the names, but not the details. It found: ADW_TOPREBATES.B (Alias: TopRebates), ADW_WEBREBATES.A, DIAL.PORNDIAL.D and ADW_BONJING.B. When I clicked on File and Print... to see if I could print the results to a file to send, my computer froze. Your instructions did not say I should allow Housecall to try cleaning these items. Since it was 1:30 AM when the PC froze, I shut it down and went to bed. Please let me know if you intended for me to have Housecall try to remove the files it identified.

Oh, Ad-Aware SE now finds 3 additional items it can't clean from Restore\Temp\: A1015257.1, A1015368.1 and A1015479.1.

Nothing can/will clean virus find in C:\_RESTORE\ More info on this available HERE This is your System Resore and its encrypted "backups" of virus/malware you have had in the past......we'll clean them momentairly..I wanted to be fairly sure all else was clean before resetting SystemRestore.

First disable System Restore
1. Close all open programs.
2. On the Windows desktop, right-click My Computer > Properties.
3. On the Performance tab, click File System.

Now re-run AdAware and see if anything is detected..also Please perform this online scan: Kaspersky Webscan
0. Make sure to click button for ONLINE SCANNER and NOT File scanner
1. Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select "Accept"
2. A dialogue box will appearing asking "Do you want to install this software?" Name: kavwebscan_unicode.cab
3. Select "Install" to download the ActiveX controls that allows ActiveScan to run.
4. If running MSAS beta you may receive an alert that an IE ActiveX program requires your approval. Click "Allow"
5. When the download is complete it will say ready, click "Next"
6. Click "Scan Settings" and check the option to use the EXTENDED DATABASE, then click "OK"

Kasperky would not run. I got the following message: "Failed to load Kaspersky On-line Scanner ActiveX control!" My PC seems to have ongoing issues with ActiveX. That's what kept me from being able to install McAfee AntiVirus.

On the other hand, when I ran Ad-Aware with System Restore enabled, it didn't give me an error message saying it could not delete files and that it would try during the next reboot.

Sounds like perhaps you have ActiveX completely disabled...Check you setting under Open IE Click Tools>Internet options>Security (tab)>Click on the Globe (Internet)>click Custom Level>Scroll down to ActiveX Controls and plug ins>Two setting to check are download activeX controls should NORMALLY be set to prompt.....You may want to try Enable for now to see if it will work. Same for Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins....set it to Enable FOR NOW. Then click OK>Yes>OK..Close and restart IE and try one of the previous scans that would NOT run..you could always run them both.

I tried resetting my ActiveX controls as you said. This involved changing only "download ActiveX controls" to enable from prompt. "Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins" was already set to enable under the Medium security settings.

I then tried first Kaspersky and then Panda, both unsuccessfully. I was not optimistic before trying because I had been through many different attempts at installing McAfee AntiVirus working with their Tech Support, trying many different ActiveX settings. They also had me try with my Zone Alarm firewall disabled. Is there any reason to think that might help? Or anything else?

To tell you the truth I suspected as much; but it was worth looking into just to see what the setting were......Let me look into this a littler deeper as it's been some time since I used a Win9x machine...I'll see what i can find out

Just a quick question I meant to ask in last post; does Windoes Update work for you?

Yes, as far as I know. I just tried Windows Update from the Start menu. The first time, with several other windows open, my PC froze. After re-starting and trying again it seemed to work okay. When I sanned for updates it told me there were no new critical updates but that I have several available updates that I have not installed - most of these are foreign language-related. I can access the list to see what they are. To me, that is normal functioning.

What version of Norton are you using?? And is the "Failed to load ActiveX" the only error you get?
