Admittedly, being a relative newcomer to W3, most of my experience with operating systems is in Windows 8--8.1. More recently, after being given an old Acer netbook, I have been  playing around with various Linux systems. But I digress. My point in writing is that there seems to be a lot of frustration with the lack of a start button. Almost all advice points to the charms bar. I don't ever mess with it. All you newcomers to W8 should be aware that if you press WINKEY + X, you will get a large pop-up in the bottom left-hand corner giving you access to everything you should need. That's all folks!

That same popup can be accessed by simply right-clicking in the bottom left corner of your screen as well!

I love the my shutdown button icon
1. Because it's on my start page and my desktop.
One click and it's done.
2. Was new to win8 and made it myself. Chose my icon
I'm really a senior ha ha
