Avast is quite slow, you can try NPAV for optimum results and if you are using old laptop then don't  update widows. You can update only iff your RAM is more than 1 GB.else it will slow down performance

Well...was this spare laptop functionally operational when given to you?

The phrase "deleted a few things" could cover many areas...specifically, what did you delete/remove?  Was the laptop fully operational before you conducted your removals?

I don't see anything that points to a problem.  Since your complaint relates to web browsing...I would remove Chrome and use IE.  I get the idea that Chrome is more resource-hungry and you don't have a large amount of resources to begin with.

I would also uninstall OGA Notifier (abandoned by Microsoft for at least 3 years now) and Microsoft Choice Guard (see Link ).

After these things, I would run the chkdsk /r command and then defrag.
