Hey

The past couple of days I've had an error in avgcsrvx.exe of my free version of AVG Antivirus 2014. I haven't noticed any particular performance issues, although this is a fairly old machine (2007) and it doesn't have enough memory, and so I often get the alert thing that comes up from AVG telling me about that deficiency.

I'm pretty much completely ignoarnt of tech issues and I realize I'm probably not providing enough information. I'd greatly appreciate any help. It may be that this is inconsequential.

Thanks

Since these errors are so common and there have been numerous complaints, AVG created this topic: How To Troubleshoot Unspecified Error Reported By AVG

Thanks for the response. I don't get "unspecified error," but I didn't write down exactly what the alert said. If it happens agiain, hopefully without a crash, I'll post back with the exact message.

Thanks again. This is a great resource.

I uninstalled AVG and everything got better. I was able to restart Windozzzz normally. I then reinstalled AVG (glutton for punishment, apparently). I seem be be OK at the moment. If I have more problems, I'm thinking I should start a new thread. I still say you guys are an outstanding resource and I'll be back if I need help.

Thanks very much.

+++++

Things have gotten much worse. They were OK this morning, but tonight:

I cannot get out of Safe Mode.

I need to disable the Firewall (just AVG, right? That's the only thing I have) to connect through Firefox by Control Panel>Security Center>Windows Firewall>Off>uncheck Firefox in Exceptions … at least I think that's what's necessary — I've been going nuts working on this. I can connect with IE just by turning it Off … I think, at least I haven't unchecked that one.

I don't seem to be able to attach anything here (understandable), so I've loaded a cropped screenshot of the error I got last Thursday from AVG and a zip file that was saved when I asked to save the log.

I'm very frustrated at this point. I suppose I should have replied to this thread Thursday before this nightmare started Sunday evening.

I'm hoping you guys can help me, but I figure I may be asking for a lot. It may be that I'll simply need to get a new computer, something I expect I'll need to do anyway pretty soon cuz this machine is seven years old and not enough memory and XP is probably outdated.

I think I'm screwed, but I'm hoping.the whole mess is just the result of AVG choking things off.

Thanks

I seem to have made some progress. I have the Firewall turned back on. I can connect in both browsers IF I select Safe Mode with Networking from the boot menu. If I select just Safe Mode, I can't. I'm wondering if the explanation is something like: the system "built a new configuration" when I turned the Firewall off, and it's using that to allow me to connect. Maybe a setup that gets around some AVG error.

I still need to get the hell out of Safe Mode.

Thanks

Hey

I don't know if you saw my edit to the first post I put up last night. I uninstalled and reinstalled AVG and things got a lot better. I imagine I'l continue to have memory shortage problems, but I figure that's a hardware issue.

Thanks

When you make edits to an original reply, they sometimes are overlooked when replying based on the email notification received.

Glad to hear things have gotten better.
