I've been having problems removing the SurfSideKick 3 from my hubbys pc. My pc was infected with it as well and I managed to remove it but my hubbys pc is being stubborn.
I tried following the tut from here for removing it but no luck.
When I click start and run and type in C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe /u it says Windows can't find that file.

I have tried Ad aware, SpyBot, AVG personal, Ewido and Highjack This a dozen times and it finds the files but won't delete them. Tried in safe mode also. I thought I better ask here b4 I end up bald lol Here's my HighJack This log:

I should also tell you that the SurfSideKick 3 was in the add/remove programs on my pc but it's not listed in there on this pc.

And in the SurfSideKick 3 folder there are only 2 files....dll files that can't be deleted....says they are in use...even in safe mode.
These are the dll files:

SskBho.dll
SskCore.dll

:thumbsup:

Hello and welcome to BC. :thumbsup:

Let's try this.

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
  • Right-click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk ( C: ) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download SideKickFix.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Please close ALL other open windows & explorer folder's, then double-click on sidekickFix.bat.
Click YES and follow the prompts, when prompted to restart the PC please do so.
Then please post back with a fresh HijackThis log by using AddReply.

Hi sjaded39 :thumbsup:

Since you are not using the tablet anymore, we can stop the process and the service from running at the startup so that it will not be using the resources unnecessarily.

Press Control-Alt-Del to enter the Task Manager.
Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Wintab32.exe

Exit the Task Manager when finished.

==========================

Please copy (Ctrl C) and paste (Ctrl V) the following text in the quote to Notepad. Save it as "All Files" and name it FixServices.bat. Please save it on your desktop.

sc stop Wintab32
sc delete Wintab32
exit

Double click FixServices.bat. A window will open and close. That's normal.

==========================
  • Close all open Explorer windows and browsers/email, etc
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button and when complete
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.
O23 - Service: Wintab32 - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\Wintab32.exe

==========================

Logitech Desktop Messenger uses "BackWeb" proactive technology to retrieve information about your Logitech devices by downloading content in the background during network idle time. Eventhough they claim not to upload any other information to their servers or any other internet servers, it's still spying in my book. So, if you want to remove this feature, simply remove "Logitech Desktop Messenger" from Add/Remove programs in the control panel

==========================

Make sure that you can see hidden files
" Click Start
" Open My Computer
" Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
" Select the View Tab
" Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders
" Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
" Click Yes to confirm
" Click OK
** These files are hidden to stop you accidentally removing something important.
It is advisable to hide them again after fixing your computer. **

==========================

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Look in here for more information.

==========================

In Safe Mode, using Windows Explorer (right click on start, click on Explore), navigate, find and delete the following file and the contents of the folder, but not the folder itself:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Sskuknwrd.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\<==== Open the folder, go to Edit>Select All then Edit > Delete
==========================

In Safe Mode, Click Start>Run
Type into the box: cleanmgr.exe
Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press "Ok" to remove:
Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Also in Safe Mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder.
Open the Temp folder and go to Edit>Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box.
The Temp folder will open. Click Edit>Select All then Edit>Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel>Internet Options.
On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files".
Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK.
Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button.
Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

==========================================

Please run Panda online scan one more time.

==========================================

Post back the results from the Panda online scan and a fresh HijackThis log please. If all is well, then we can go ahead and secure the system.

I did the Control-Alt-Del to end the wintab32 and made the bat file and ran that but when I ran HJT again it wasn't listed there anymore to fix it.

I restarted in safe mode and found the Sskuknwrd.dll and another dll file that started with Ssk and deleted them but I didn't delete everything else in that folder because there were a lot of folders in there...should I have deleted all them folders?

I did everything else. I noticed 2 new files on the desktop called thumbs.
Also when this all started, when the pc is restarted and windows starts up, there is a black box that pops up for a second just like the one that popped up when I clicked on that .bat file you had me make. That still happens.

Here's my new logs:

I restarted in safe mode and found the Sskuknwrd.dll and another dll file that started with Ssk and deleted them but I didn't delete everything else in that folder because there were a lot of folders in there...should I have deleted all them folders?

No, you shouldn't. It's good that you deleted the second Ssk file that didn't show up in the scan, but not everything else.

Go ahead and delete the FixServices.bat from your desktop if you still have it.

I did everything else. I noticed 2 new files on the desktop called thumbs.

Can you tell me what's inside those folders? Can you also right click on them go to Properties and telll me what it says for each?

Boot into Safe Mode, like you did before and do the following in Safe Mode:

Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the following folder and delete everything inside the folder, but not the folder itself:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\

Make sure that you can see hidden files (re: my previous post) and delete the following files and folders:

C:\ZICORN004.exe
C:\WINDOWS\keyboard181.dat
C:\WINDOWS\R2F0ZXdheV9Vc2Vy\

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Reboot in Normal Mode . Run Panda again and let me know the results please.

It's one of those stubborn files. No need to take a drastic step like reinstall. We'll get it.

Click here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit. Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the 'Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste the following, clicking the red 'Delete File' button (red circle with a white X) after pasting:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Ssk.log

Click 'Exit' when done.

========================

Please download Ccleaner and save it to your desktop.

Tutorial for CCleaner

During the installation be sure to UN-check the box for "Ccleaner Yahoo Toolbar" unless you want it
  • Click on Options,
  • Select Advanced
  • Now UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
  • Make sure the Cleaner block on the left is selected. (Do not use the "Issues" block)
  • Choose the Windows tab.
  • Check everything EXCEPT Advanced part of the Menu.
  • Click on "Analyze". This process could take a while.
    If you don't want to loose your login passwords to certain sites, click on Options, select cookies and move the ones you want to keep to the "cookies to keep" section, by highlighting and using the arrows in the middle.
  • Choose Run Cleaner.
  • When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.
  • Click Exit.
If you have more than one users, run Ccleaner for every user.
===========================================

Check to see if the ssk.log is gone.

P.S. Thumbs.db is a system file that is normally hidden from you... when you set your system up to show all files so you could combat the malware... files such as those were then visible... they are normal and nothing to worry about. When you set to hide your system files again, they would not be seen.

That's wonderful. :thumbsup: Now you've got a clean system. :flowers:

Let's do some tidying up first. You can delete the following from your desktop now.

Killbox
BFU

Empty your Recycle bin.
Ccleaner is a useful tool to clean temporary files and cookies. You can keep it and use it on a regular basis.
=============================================

Remember to hide your system files again.

Start>My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View
Under the Hidden files and Folders heading uncheck Show hidden files and folders.
check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
check the Hide file extensions for known file types.
Click OK.

============================================

Disable and Enable System Restore If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point. Because Windows regularly sets restorepoints, it's very possible that the malware, you have removed, is still present in the System Restore. If you put Windows back to such a restorepoint, this malware will be put back, as well.

This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.) Please do this ONLY ONCE, not on a regular basis.

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.

4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

Reboot normally.

You can also find instructions on how to disable and re enable system restore here:
Windows XP System Restore Guide

And that's all. But to help protect you against further infections, and also to help prevent criminals using your computer to infect other people's computers on the web, I recommend the following: (You may already have some of the items)

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Keep your antivirus-program up-to-date and do regular scans with it. Please make sure that you have only one active antivirus program on your system.
If you haven't got an antivirus, you can download and install one of the following free ones: Make sure that you have only ONE antivirus running on your computer as more than one would cause conflict and render the computer vulnerable.

AVG Free here
AntiVir here
Avast here

It is essential to keep the anti-virus program fully updated.
IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site <http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/> to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site <http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/m...g.aspx?lc=en-us> and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Keep your pestware-scanners up-to-date and do regular scans with them.

To keep your computer free of Spyware, Adware, Hijackers etc., download and install the following free pestware-scanners (if you haven't installed them already):
AdAware here
Spybot here Remember to "immunize" after each update
Windows Defender here

Install realtime pestware-scanners and keep them up-to-date.

The following free realtime pestscanners prevent a number of malware-variants from entering your computer, in the first place:

SpywareBlaster here Remember to "enable all protection" after each update.
SpywareGuard here

If you haven't got one, already, install a firewall and keep it up-to-date. Please make sure that you have only one active firewall on your system.

A firewall will prevent unauthorized contact between your computer and internet.
If there is no firewall installed on your computer, you can download and install one of the following free firewalls:
ZoneAlarm here
Sygate here
Kerio Personal Firewall here
Outpost here
Important: (Windows XP only) If you install a firewall, be sure to turn off the WinXP-firewall!

Test your firewall here to make sure that it's working properly

Install these programs, to make surfing with Internet Explorer safer:

A popup-blocker, f.e. Google Toolbar here: A popup-blocker prevents popup-windows from opening, when you come along a websites that uses them, during internet-surfing.

IE-SPYAD here: This utility adds a long list of known bad sites to Internet Explorer's Restricted Sites zone. This prevents those sites from executing their malicious programs on your computer.

SiteHound by Firetrust
here:

Firetrust introduces the SiteHound Toolbar - the safe way to browse the Internet. With SiteHound, when you browse the Internet, you're shown a warning page every time you go to a site which is a known scam, potentially loads viruses or spyware on to your computer, has questionable content or anything you would not consider reasonable. You are shown a warning page with information about that site. From there you can choose to enter the site or go back. SiteHound is a free add-on to Internet Explorer.
SiteHound will alert you when you enter a site which is known to contain:
Fraudulent claims or scams
Offensive material
Security vulnerabilities
Spyware or Adware
Spam related material
or other content deemed to be unsafe
Specifically, SiteHound blocks these categories:

o Adult o Spyware o Spam Advertising o Phishing o Possible scam or fraud o Misleading or False Advertising
o Pharming o Rogue or Suspect Product o Adware o Malware or Virus

Install and use an alternative browser to surf on the internet.

Because Internet Explorer is the most-used browser on the planet, most of the hijackers, adware and spyware are made to abuse your computer thru Internet Explorer.
Here are some good alternative browsers:
Mozilla Suite here
Mozilla Firefox here
Opera here
Netscape here
Important: You can not uninstall Internet Explorer.
First of all, it's part of Windows and you'll need it to download and install Windows Updates.
Secondly, There are some sites that are only accessable with Internet Explorer, e.g. most of the Online Malware-scanners.

But above all, keep all your software UP-TO-DATE at all time!!

Also, I would recommend reading the excellent advice by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place

Happy and safe surfing. :huh:

Please take the time to visit Malware Complaints and register your complaint.
The infection you had was SurfsideKick

Oh and I did manage to get a screen shot of that black box that pops up when I restart...it's something from AOL.
