Hello,

My system is Windows XP, Version 202, Service Pack 3, 2.31 GHz, 3.25 GB of RAM. I have 398 GB free of 465 GB of hard drive space.

I feel like it starts out fine and speedy when I launch Firefox but then within time it bogs down in slowness when going from tab to tab. I feel like this has just happened in the last week or two. It also is slow to start up the computer. Once I close the browser and restart it, however, it runs very quick.

Now, I do have Microsoft Security Essentials and also an outdated McAfee. I know there can be a conflict with two AVs and I've had this combination for a while and hasn't been this sluggish. I suppose the first step should be to uninstall McAfee?

I also have iTunes and its accessory programs that might be slowing things down (but I use it to sync and charge my iPod).

I'm wondering if there is a way to view what's running and then have the experts determine what doesn't need to be running and using the resources?

I have run MSE, Spybot, SuperAntiSpyware, and Malwarebytes and nothing comes up so I'm wondering if there are just too many programs running. I do not need to run Defrag either.

I would greatly appreciate any feedback and guidance on how to get the machine to run quicker again.

Thank you.

:thumbup2: , thanks...it will take me a few minutes to look through the data but I will edit this post with my opinions, what I see, etc.

OK, I see two areas that may contribute to your problems.

    a.  Maximum temp range for CPU is 55-71 Celsius and your average CPU temp is approaching that.

    b.  You have McAfee programs installed and you also have MSE installed.  Even though it appears that the AV is disabled...McAfeee throws so many services, etc. on a system that I suggest uninstalling it and using the Windows Firewall with MSE for basic protection.  You also have SUPERAntiSpyware installed, but it normally does not conflict with anything, so leave it.  I would also uninstall Spybot, since you already have a better product (SAS) installed and the usefulness of Spybot is questionable, IMO.

Uninstall OGA Notifier, using Add/Remove Programs.  Program retired by MS in Dec 2010, is of no value today.

Uninstall McAfee Security Center

I would follow this by running the chkdsk /r command.  Start/Run...type chkdsk /r and hit Enter.  Type Y in new screen, hit Enter.  Reboot.  The command will execute before booting into Windows.

Then I would see how the system runs.

Thanks for your help.

As far as the high temperature, do you think having a fan nearby would help cool the computer down?

Also, I don't think I need the HP applications running in my task manager. Same goes with FlipShare, Logitech Camera, AmazonDownloader, Yahoo Messenger. Is there a way I can disable them from the startup? As for iTunes, it has a lot of components, too. Would it be advised to do the same for that program?

Thanks again.

Well...I uninstall programs that I don't use routinely or which really serve no purpose for me at this time.  I can't tell you what to do with your system...other than what I previously mentioned.

Frankly...I have always thought that the idea of employing a fan to cool a system that is overheating...fails to take the logical approach to addressing the problem.  There is a heatsink/cooler on the CPU which is supposed to negate the possibility of overheating.  If that heatsink/fan combo is not doing the job...the approach I would take would be to remove/replace said heatsink/fan, applying the proper amount of thermal grease.  Heatsink/fans are not terribly expensive and they are very important...and they generally are not difficult to replace, just takes a little patience :).

Stock Heatsink/Fan

Contrary to what some may say...stock AMD heatsinks/fans do the job quite adequately, no need for a heatsink/fan purported to do more/better :).

How To

Also...a simple cleaning of the current system might be all that's needed, rather than a replacement.

Louis,

I uninstalled McAfee and ran the MCPR tool. However, "some or all of the files may not have been removed successfully." I saved the results in a notepad, if necessary. Does this happen often?

Thanks.

I think that's just a CYA (cover your xxx) announcement by McAfee :).  Historically, users of McAfee products have had problems trying to uninstall it.  Time will tell.

These leftovers are called "orphans" and they occur routinely with any given program and are not necessarily something to worry about, IMO.  I believe they result from the fact that the uninstall routine written by the program developer...just did not do the job and completely remove the application.

Not worth worrying over unless problems result, IMO.

Louis,

My computer runs much, much faster after removing McAfee. The speed is noticeable. I think having an outdated, bloated McAfee was causing the sluggishness. Thank you so much for your all your help, suggestions, and feedback. I appreciate you taking the time to help me!

By the way, I have done the chkdsk /r command thing yet. Do you still recommend it even though the speed is much improved?

Sure, it won't ever hurt anything and it will check the file system for anything that might need attention :).  You don't have to have a problem in order to justify running it :).

Well, I ran it and it took a very long time to complete. Unfortunately, I didn't see the results as I was in a different room when it finished and rebooted. Is there a way to find out the results without having to redo the check?

No need to check results of a chkdsk /r if you are not experiencing problems, IMO.  I've not found any useful info by doing such...which could not otherwise be discovered or confirmed.

Thanks Louis. I guess something would have showed up after the scan if it needed my attention. Appreciate all your help in my situation! Feel free to close this thread.
