I followed your excellent instructions and was successful at cleaning my computer except for the two 'F2' log entries shown below in the HijackThis log. I read your tutorial and understand that these values are getting reloaded from IniFileMapping. As soon as I delete them with RegEdit or Reged32, the values mysteriously get reloaded. I cannot find anywhere else in my Registry or on my harddrives where they are getting reloaded from. I cannot get beyond this point. Here are the two entries, and the complete log is below.

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe, C:\WINNT\system32\uxcva.exe
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\Userinit.exe,gsjalgp.exe

I am trying to remove the 'C:\WINNT\system32\uxcva.exe' and 'gsjalgp.exe'.

Please help! TIA.

Hello,
  • Download Brute Force Uninstaller to your C:\
  • Unzip it to a folder of its own (C:\BFU). So the BFU-folder should be on your root. In most cases this is C:\
  • Download qoofix.bat (rightclick on this link and choose save as)
  • Place qoofix.bat in your C:\BFU - folder. (Important!)
  • Doubleclick qooFix.bat, Close all browsers and explorer folders.
  • Choose option 1 (Qoolfix autofix) and follow the prompts.
  • Please be patient, it will take about five minutes.
  • After the PC has restarted please post another hijackthis log.

Hey, you are brilliant! Below is the new HJT log. Looks to me as if those sticky buggers are finally gone!

If you see any other items of concern in this log, please let me know.

I will monitor my computer's behavior the rest of the weekend, and if everything holds up by Monday, a very appreciative, generous, and well-deserved donation will be spread around between this site, HJT, SpyBot, and Ad-Aware. Thank you very much for your invaluable help.

Hello,

I can't see anything suspicious in your log anymore, however, I recommend you check and fix next entry in hijackthis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZTgServerSwitch] C:\Program Files\support.com\client\lserver\server.vbs

It is a part of Sony's Vaio support agent. It is really not required and is regarded as spyware.

You were dealing with the Qoologic infection previously, it was also responsible for popups.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Excellent! I took your advice and deleted the Sony VAIO Support Agent and installed Spywareblaster. I did a windowsupdate and ran Housecall just yesterday. I will keep everything up-to-date and run checks frequently.

I will be back to this site on Monday. I am very glad I discovered this excellent site. Thank you for making the world safe for computers.
