Hi everyone, this is my first post on this forum but I will try to be as accurate as possible in describing my issue. I'm running 32bit Vista and I've included a DxDiag text file so you can have a more intimate knowledge of what I'm running.

So here's my problem. About six months ago I reformatted/reinstalled Windows through system recovery. I did this just to keep my computer clean and running smoothly. After some time I noticed that my computer would completely freeze when watching netflix, and sometimes flash videos from other sites such as Dailymotion, Kissanime, Youtube, and generally any site with streaming video. When the issue occurs the computer is totally frozen. I'm unable to move the mouse, ctrl/alt/delete, etc, and I'm forced to hard reset by holding the power button. The problem was rare at first but over time it became intermittent, and then frequent. Just this morning I reformatted Vista again in an attempt to fix the issue, yet the problem still occurs.

Here are some facts I've learned from troubleshooting the issue over time:

*Most important* The type of video player used by the site has a clear effect on the probability of my computer freezing. With Netflix it is almost assured my comuter will freeze within 5-10 minutes, or less. With Youtube it is unlikely to freeze at all, but rarely does anyway.

*Also important* The problem occurs only with streaming video. I can run very graphics intensive games such as Skyrim on ultra settings (graphically intensive for my computer) for hours and hours with no effect, and even with multiple programs running in the background with no freezing issue. I also don't have any problem running long blu-ray quality movies downloaded to my computer for any length on time, with any video software; such as VLC or Windows Media Player.

I have of course tried removing/reinstalling Flash, Shockwave, and Silverlight multiple times with no effect.

Turning off hardware acceleration has no effect.

The browser has no effect on this issue. I've tried with Firefox, IE, and Chrome. The issue persists with each of them.

The issue did not begin to occur until my last reformat six months ago. No piece of hardware has been changed.

Maximizing the video, or keeping it minimized has no effect on the issue. It occurs regardless eitherway.

Here is an approximation of what I did after reformatting this morning. Fully updated Windows and Java, installed graphics drivers for videocard, installed Firefox, installed VLC and Winrar, installed Flash, installed Flash Shockwave, (important note: computer froze after installing Shockwave when the page redirected to the 'Thank you for installing Shockwave' page which obviously contained Shockwave) then I finally installed Silverlight and tested Netflix where it promptly froze for a second time. I did allow for necessary computer restarts between installations though not noted. I also uninstalled some programs I deemed unecessary, such as Snapfish, Norton, and Yahoo toolbar.

A final and bizarre note: For some reason unknown to me the particular show I choose to watch seems to have some effect on the issue regarding Netflix. Live action movies seem to take longer for the computer to freeze, yet animated shows, specifically the G1 Transformers cartoon causes it to freeze within a minute every time, and it has been my primary tool for checking to see if the issue is resolved or not.

That's all the information I can think of at the moment. I hope someone can help because it is truly baffling to me. I would of course be glad to provide any additional information to the best of my knowledge. Thanks~

Please download MiniToolBox, and save it to your desktop and run it, and checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

So my CPU temp was only 44C during the speccy test. I didn't feel that was accurate so I decided to monitor it while I played Transformers on Netflix and find out what temp it freezes at. Right upon starting the show my CPU temp quickly escalated to 60C, and then inched 70C quite steadily. The temp fluctuated between 67 and 74 for about 15 minutes until my computer froze at 70C. I'm no expert of course but this seems a likely cause right? Still, I find it curious that only streaming video causes it to freeze and not games, downloaded movies or anything else.

Here's a screen

Slimline case. It used to have constant problems with overheating, but since I've upgraded the PSU a few years ago I haven't had any issues. I guess its coming back to bite me.

Can you post the model number or a picture of it? Have you dusted it out in a while?

Looks about like this. I dust it out pretty regularly but it is winter, so heaters are on and there's not as much air flowing around the room. Still though the PSU never gets very hot. At least not nearly as hot as the stock 140w PSU. I guess thats a good reason why I never suspected my CPU to be overheating. Whenever it freezes I reach out my hand and feel on the PSU for heat, and never really thought to monitor the CPU. Model # is s3400f.

I would try and get a bigger case like a mid tower. Is that a custom PC or is it a OEM like HP or Dell?

Ya, the case is OEM (HP). Bought it in 2008 and have since replaced just about everything inside of it except the motherboard and CPU. Everything has to be low-profile so its a real pain. Was there nothing in the information I provided that would provide an alternative explaination of the freezes? If not I'll probably start saving up for a new rig all together.
