Creating win 7 backup image

I am interested in creating a back up image. I read the tutorial on this site (see link below) it prety much described the same steps that I followed from a different site



After I create the image when I access it in windows explorer the back up file was empty the whole folder itself was only 20KB. I don't know where it went wrong. I am assuming that since the disc I was creating an image from was about 250GB that the file should be about the same size. I tried creating the image on a second internal hard drive and also an external hard drive.


Thanks in advance for any recomendations. If I am leaving out info I can go through the process again and make notes on any specific details needed to figure this out.
