I recently have had this message " windows explorer not responding" and many others ie firefox not responding, media player not responding etc  on my Vista o/s laptop .

This has only been an issue within the last few months and has become annoying to say the least, after running sfc/scannow as advised in other posts i discovered a couple of lines of code that could not be repaired via published report.

This seems to be an occurence on many posts referring to a "false positive" and can be ignored.

I had to re-install back to factory settings as a precauton and tried again and the same thing some apps  not responding.

After about three re-installs I tried the sfc/scanow again but I did not connect to the internet at any point and surprisingly the lines of code are still in the program list .....this is a litttle disconcerting as it suggests the faulty code is in the original o/s .

As an aside after the fourth re-install my laptop is working fine and has not give me any error messages and I now have update via windows update and all seems ok.

I wonder is it an issue to create a faulty Vista (  built in obselence ) to  provoke a new laptop to be bought ? Big Brother an all that.

My real question is if this occurs again should I buy a Windows 7 package and is it better than Vista....I have to say that until a couple of months ago i was happy with Vista.

Regards Rod

You are running both Microsoft Security Essentials and Avast.  You should only run one antivirus, you need to disable or uninstall one of these.

Please run sfc /scannow again and post the log it generates.

To access the log click on the Start orb and Type cmd in the Search programs and files box.

cmd will appear in the pane above the search box, right click on it and choose Run as administrator.

This will open the Elevated Command Prompt, this will look similar to the image below.

commandprompt_zps212bc71a.png

Copy and then paste the following in the Elevated Command Prompt and then press Enter:    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

This will place an icon on your desktop titled sfcdetails, click on this to open it, copy and then paste this in your next post.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

Go to the Search box, copy and paste the following.  %localappdata%\microsoft\Windows Sidebar and press Enter.

This will open up the Sidebar gadgets folder, you should see a file named Settings.ini. Right click on this file and choose Rename, rename this file to Settings.ini.old.

Close the Sidebar, then reopen it.  There should be a new file named Settings.ini.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

Restart the computer and open the sidebar to see if there is two files, the old one and the new one.
