Hi I have multiple processes running on the computer especially the svchost.exe which is around 10-15 exes. Okay so I researched on the internet for possible solutions, msconfig to disable unwanted programs done, run full scan malwarebytes and mse done, nothing found.. Tried using microsoft fix it tools nothing found, anyway if you need some log files for further checks I can send it here, I just don't want to mess up with my laptop that's why I am asking for help in this site. Thanks.

Hello -

Quite often people post "multiple processes running on the computer" and list similar items.

I have just looked at running processes on my XP and there are at least 7 or 8 versions of svchost.exe running.

To me this is considered very normal at any time.

I have also checked my Win 7 laptop and found about 14 versions of svchost.exe running.

This is the same with iexplore.exe, and I do not wish to end any of these processes.

Considering that I have a 1Gig XP and the computer is over 90% Free Space, I could increase these very quickly.

I would think that your sysyem is generally normal. Just clean it up a bit.

Update and run a Full Scan with your Antivirus

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.
NOTE : Please close or save all work, as the computer will be Auto Rebooted
Double-click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
Click on the Scan button. (only once)
AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for review.
If you see any which you do not want removed, remove the check mark next to it.
Next: Click on the Clean button (only once) to remove the selected items.
You will receive a message telling you that all programs will be close so that the infections can be removed.
Click on OK, and then OK again to confirm the reboot.
When cleaning process is complete a log (AdwCleaner[S0].txt ) of what was removed will be on your desktop.
Please Copy and Paste this log in your next post.

A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.

Finally

Please download Temp File Cleaner by Old Timer
Usage Instructions:

  • Download TFC from the download link above and save the file on your desktop.
  • Close ALL running applications as TFC will terminate them before attempting to clean up the temporary files.
  • Double-click on the TFC icon.
  • When the program opens, click on the Start button.  TFC will terminate the Explorer process and all running applications and then begin the process of cleaning out all of your temp folders.
  • When done, press OK and reboot your computer to finish the cleanup.

Okay, scvhost is a service host used by windows, over the years the amount of services each process holds has been reduced resulting in an increased amount of instances of this process running on newest versions of windows, this means that when a service inside a scvhost fails only that scvhost process and all of it's services fail, instead of every single service failing.

If your only concern was about the amount of scvhost instances in your task manager you shouldn't worry mutch, just make sure you run an Anti-Malware tool once in a while.

Anyways, feel free to follow the steps provided by noknojon to do a general clean up of your computer.

I didn't want to open a new thread so I will post here my question

When I open the task manager it displays 55 processes running

The thing is that I see only 22 processes. Is this normal?

:welcome: to Bleeping Computer.

And you're welcome on behalf of the Bleeping Computer community.

I am glad to hear this topic was helpful, however, for others finding their way here...there can be various reasons for a slow computer and poor performance so solutions will vary. Even if your problem is similar to the original poster's problem, the solution could be different based on the kind of hardware, software, system requirements, etc. you are you are using and the possible presence of malware.

AdwCleaner is a portable adware cleaner created by Xplode (a BC Security Colleague) that is designed to search for and remove many potentially unwanted programs (PUPs), adware, toolbars, browser hijackers , browser extensions, add-ons/plug-ins, browser helper objects (BHOs) and other junkware as well as related services, registry entries (values, keys), files, folders and potentially unwanted extensions.

For those who believe they are dealing with malware, the proper forum to post their log is the Am I infected? What do I do? forum.

The Slow Computer/Browser? Check here first; it may not be malware should be one of the first resources to read.
