Computer: Gateway All-in-one

Model: ZX6971-UR30p

OS: Win 7 with current updates

BIOS unknown (Gateway does not identify it)

This is my wife's computer.

She got a case of malware. (Microsoft Security Essentials Alert: 3 problems,, clean computer). This is a bogus program.

I have run Malwarebytes and Stopzilla. Not sure the problem is removed - no issues tonight.

In an effort to remove it I discovered the following problems:

F8 will not boot windows to Safe Mode. (I wanted to do this to run anti-malware software in safe mode with networking)

The start screen says DEL for setup, F12 for boot screen.

Neither one of these work.

I have tried a different keyboard (usb plug-in with no luck).

I have tried using the Fn key with no luck.

In addition to this, an Acronis boot disk for making clones, no longer works. I begins to start, then goes to a windows 7 start screen, and a boot from there.

I am out of ideas.

Try holding the Fn key and then pressing F8 or F12.  The newer bios in computers being manufactured now days are UEFI capable, and manufacturers are making it that you have the option of using Fn or not, for Function keys.

Thank You for the reply Greg62702.

I had come across that information earlier and have tried it with no success.

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

Hello..
You had a malware issue.
Then ran 3 tools.
Appears all found and removed items, hopefully quarantined.
Then the keys issue occurred.

It would appear something removed some file(s) that it should not have.

Can you post the logs or return all the quarantined files and see if they work again.

boopme,

Thank you for replying.

I do not have the log files.

Between Malwarebytes and Stopzilla I may have the quarantined files.

I would not like restoring quarantined files.

I will look to see.

Any other ideas?

I was thinking to get it back to its infected but normal state. Then re-clean.

Do you have a System Restore point from prior to all this?
