I'm trying to resolve a slow connection to my NAS on my home network

I have a slow (30+ second) lag when starting my user in xp and accessing files on my synology NAS server (1812+). Below is my information:

 

Make and model of computer: Dell Optiplex 960

How the computer is connected (wireless or wired): Wired (25 foot run)

Make and model of Router: Verizon FIOS Actiontec model: MI424WR-GEN3I

Approximate Distance From the router the PC is if its a wireless connection: 25'

What type of internet you have (Dsl, Cable, T-1,etc..) Fiber Optic 75d/35

So everything is wired together no wireless? At least between the PC in question and the NAS. Does the time improve? Like if you do another xfer is it better?

This computer is wired, the others are not, they're wireless but much faster connection. The lag is consistently slow when I use my Dell with XP, when I use synology DSM File Station, it's quick, but that's on the servers' side.

Do you mean if I do another xfer after the initial connection is it better? Yes usually, however another anomaly I noticed is that the subfolders within a shared NAS folder don't all show with the this computer until I hit refresh once or twice, and I get errors sometimes that I don't have the right to access the system, but if I wait and try again I get in...some type of timing out problem.
