Something has become very wrong with my XP.

I was getting strange Application error pop ups from programs I currently had, but would not open the programs.  I tried downloading some repair programs, but after downloading them, it would not let me open them.

I figured something was wrong with my registry, but I dont have a Recovery Disk and the Recovery F11 (or F whatever wont work-- by the way I have a Dell 5150).  My restore points won't go back further than a week, which doesn't fix the problems.

I have run antivirus-- everything seems okay.  I have run a couple of reg scans and it says everything is ok.  I don't know what is going on.

Any suggestions?

Your C; drive only has 6% free space, on a hdd of this size you should have a minimum of 15% free space.  You need to free up at least 8GB of space.  This small amount of free space (also known as swap space) can increase your read and write times, it can even cause BSODs and other problems.

Once you have done this you should run chkdsk c: /r

I would suggest that you run chkdsk /r, this will repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information.

Click on Start, click on Run and type cmd in the box and press Enter.

You will see an image similar to the one below.

Screenshot2.jpg

Type in or copy and paste chkdsk /r in the Command Prompt and then press Enter.  If you type this in be aware of the space between chkdsk and /r.

You will get the following message:

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.  Would you like to shcedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?  (Y/N)

Press the Y key, then press Enter

Restart your computer to run the scan.  This has five sections and will take some time.  Please don't try to use your computer while this scan is running.

A log file will be created which can be found in winlogon.  This can be found in the Event Viewer under Applications.

Click on Start, click on Run and type eventvwr.msc then click on Enter.  Click on Application and select the most recent winlogon entry.

Please copy and then paste this in your next post.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

thanks.  I did all of that-  deleted photos, movies and ran chkdsk.

I went to the most recent winlogon, but it won't copy and paste.  Is there another way to get it to you?

Did the log indicate that there were bad sectors?

You may want to run chkdsk /f and see if it fixes the disk errors you will need to hit Y and then reboot.
