Hello all

I seem to be having troubles with my computer freezing once in a while.  It started a while ago, and at first i thought it was from the operating system, so i did a clean install, and it did not change the problem.  My next thought was overheating, so i downloaded some programs to track the heat in the computer, and with some googling, i found the temperatures to be relatively normal (goes up to 70C max when gaming).  The problem can only be recreated by leaving my computer on long enough to freeze, which could be from a couple hours, to a couple days.  When i check the Event Viewer, there is nothing about what caused the problem, just a critical error that says Unexpected shutdown.

After a while, when i would restart the frozen machine, i would see that it is doing a Disk Check on my HDD, drive D.  It was an old drive that i placed in my machine that i was using for files, and i figured that could be one of the problems, so i backed everything up and replaced it with a brand new HDD.

I have decided to join the ranks of IT and start studying for my A+ exam from CompTIA, and reading through the book written by Mike Meyers, i found out about S.M.A.R.T. monitoring, and i downloaded an application called SpeedFan, which he suggested, to see what it had to say about my SSD(which holds my OS) and my HDD(which holds my files).  The Fitness on my SSD is 27%, and the fitness on my new HDD is 92%.

I was wondering if there was any other test i can do for the system.  I have tried running the Error-checking tool, and it gives no errors or bad sectors.  It is a custom built computer, with specs down below.

Operating system: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Processor: i7-3820
RAM: 2x4GB
MOBO: Gigabyte X79-UD3
Video: 2x AMD Radeon HD7770
Sound: Onboard
Ethernet: Onboard
SSD: Kingston SV200S3128G
HHD: Seagate ST2000DM001-1CH164

I do have 1 device in my Devices Manager that has a warning sign, its a High Definition Audio Controller, but i don't think that it is the problem.  The error is "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"

If there is any information that i am missing, let me know.

Hi Jeevis, To help pinpoint the problems I'd like you to run som tests and post the results here. Thank you and good luck.

Please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 , taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Download the following, after reading the instructions...burn the .iso file to CD...then run the long/extended generic diagnostic, please.  Do not attempt any "fixes", just run the long diagnostic and post the results.

Guide, SeaTools For DOS - http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/SeaToolsDOSguide.pdf

SeaTools for DOS Download - http://www.seagate.com/support/internal-hard-drives/consumer-electronics/ld25-series/seatools-dos-master/

Windows 7 and 8 have a built in ISO burner.
  1. Insert a recordable CD, DVD, or Blu‑ray Disc into your disc burner.

  2. Open Computer by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Computer.

  3. In Windows Explorer, find the disc image file, and then double-click it.

  4. If you have more than one disc burner, from the Disc burner list in Windows Disc Image Burner, click the burner that you want to use.

  5. (Optional) If you want to verify that the disc image was burned correctly to the disc, select the Verify disc after burning check box.

If the integrity of disc image file is critical (for example, the disc image file contains a firmware update), you should select this check box.

  6. Click Burn to burn the disc.

I have Seatools on a DVD i made called "Ultimate Boot CD". I will run it.
I have also ran a test with Memtest86 for around 13 hours, with no error messages. (Before i slept, and i just stopped it when i got home from work)
These are the other things you have asked for.

I see that partition 1 on your main drive has only 1% free. For optimum performance you should have at least 10% free. You should increase that partition to that amount using a free partition tool like minipartition tool http://download.cnet.com/Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.html?part=dl-6285158&subj=dl&tag=button. Steam is throwing a lot of errors. I'd suggest uninstalling it using Revo Uninstaller and scan for left over traces. Then I'd redownload it and reinstall it. Finally, using Utorrent can be risky as a lot if not most torrents contain malware. I hope thi shelps you out.

First off, SeaTools for DOS v2.23 is not detecting any of my drives, or my controllers, which it weird because my BIOS finds it fine.

Partition 1 Is the full SSD, which means i can not increase the partition size without using RAID.

I have just cleared up some files in the TMP folder, which should make that less of a problem, but a slow computer would be different than crashing.

I will uninstall steam like you said, and reinstall it.

I know the risks associated with uTorrent, and i use it more for downloading Linux/Tools from known sources.

You can transfer some files to the other drive.  Not having enough disk space will cause it to crash similar to how a full vacuum cleaner bag will not be able to do it's job.

I now have 16GB free, and i am freeing up the space even more.  The problem was happening still on a clean installation of windows before, so i believe there is still that problem.

I am curious to see what the Seagate test shows. The Speccy report passed both drives but there were two Harddrive errors showing on the minitoolbox report. The Seagate test is more accurate than Speccy. Freeing up the space may not solve the problem as a whole but it will definately help.

As i said earlier, the Seagate tools wont find my drives.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled steam, and transfered some of the steam games over to my D: Drive, i now have plenty of free space (28.8 free of 119)

I also have a bunch of other HDD test tools as well, from the Ultimate Boot CD.

That is wierd that seagate doesn't detect them when all other tests so far and you bios does. I forgot that you had said that. Have you tried the other tests? Also have you seen any progress since freeing up space?

I have a program called Speed Fan, Which is a hardware and S.M.A.R.T monitor.  As i said in my initial post, the program shows the fitness of the SSD to be 20%, but i am not sure what it means.

http://www.hddstatus.com/hdrepshowreport.php?ReportCode=7807575&ReportVerification=1DED71F4

The new hard drive has 92% fitness

http://www.hddstatus.com/hdrepshowreport.php?ReportCode=7807577&ReportVerification=FEAD8545

Ill try burning the Seatools itself to a DVD, and see if it is just the disk that i made that is screwing up.

I tried burning a fresh copy from the link you sent me, and the same results have happened.

Let's try this one. The SSD being full may account for the 20% rating.

Hard Drive Diagnostics:

http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

Make sure you select the tool which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.

Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.

If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurnhttp://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), to make the CD bootable.

For Toshiba drives, see here: http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=ServicesSupport/FujitsuDrivesUSandCanada/SoftwareUtilities#diagnostic

Kingston does seem to make it hard to find diagnostics for their prodects. Please givee this link a try. I know it supports SSDs of all kinds. http://hddscan.com/
