For the past week I've been getting frequent BSODs that don't seem to occur in any sort of pattern. Sometimes my laptop will be on for hours before it happens. The BSOD problem used to occur infrequently (i.e. once a month) that I didn't really pay attention, but I really want to get this fixed. BlueScreenView pinpoints the common denominator to ntoskrnl.exe.

I've attached the minidump (hopefully I did this right since I had to tweak around with the user access permissions) and the MiniToolbox files.

I'm not very good with computers so I would really appreciate any help.

Thank you!

Hi,

As a first step update Avast Free to the latest program version 9.0.2013.  The version you have installed has been linked to BSOD's.

I will request that you post the information you produce in this topic, not at a host website where I will have to download it to my computer.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

 Checkmark the following checkboxes:

• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs
• List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
• List Minidump Files

Click on Go to start the scan.  Once it is finished highlight the text, copy it and paste it in your next post.

Double click on the download and choose to run the program.

A screen similar to the one below will open, click any key to run the program.

securitycheck_zpscfb86945.png

When the scan is finished you will have a log similar to the one below, copy and then paste your log in your next post.

Please update

Adobe Flash Player 12.0.0.43 Flash Player out of Date!
Adobe Reader 10.1.9 Adobe Reader out of Date!
Mozilla Firefox (3.6.16) Firefox out of Date!

I analysed your minidump files and the errors are coming from all over the system, system file corruption is a likely culprit.

Please run

sfc /scannow

from a elevated command prompt (start button>accessories>right click command prompt>run as administrator)

Please let us know how you go, and post the minidump if you BSOD again.

Hi,

I checked through Adobe Reader X but the program says I'm up to date.

Do I need to keep Firefox updated if I never use it?

I also ran sfc /scannow and there were no issues. I've actually ran it a few times before and also found no issues during those times.

BSODs are very random...the next one may be tomorrow, next week, next month... =/

Thanks!

If you never use Firefox, uninstall it.... Even unused it is a security hole.

Uninstall Adobe reader X, and install XI from here, or even better you could try PDFXchange Viewer. It's much less leaky and does more than Adobe Reader.

Do you use a VPN?

also...

reinstall or uninstall

Garmin is a global positioning system, if they use the GPS those applications can be useful.  It is possible that the update service may be corrupt, I would suggest uninstalling it and then reinstall it.

I would suggest staying away from torrents, downloading torrents is one of the fastest ways I know of to get infected.  You never know what is embedded in what you download.

Bonjour is part of the iTunes download, if you don't use the applications it contains you can delete it.  Bonjour shows up in most of the minitoolbox logs and isn't the cause of what it happening.

I would suggest uninstalling Peerblock, even if it is only temporary, so we can determine if this is part of the problem.

It appears that there are some driver issues, but let's wait and see what the sfc /scannow does.

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces corrupted and incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Click on the Sart orb startorb_zps06e1f985.png and type cmd in the Search programs and files box.

In the pane above the search box Programs will appear with cmd below it, right click on cmd and choose Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, enter the password, or click Allow.

A page similar to the one below will open.

commandprompt_zps212bc71a.png

Type in sfc /scannow and then press Enter to start the scan.  Please notice the space between sfc and the /scannow.

If the scan finds no integrity  problems in the first portion of the scan it should stop, to be sure that the scan has stopped wait five minutes, then type in exit and press Enter to stop the scan.

To post the sfc log copy and then paste the following in the Elevated Command Prompt:    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

This will place an icon on your desktop titled sfcdetails, click on this to open it, copy and then paste this in your next post.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

I had the same problem with the Garmin errors as soon as I installed Garmin Express a couple of months ago and it was not resolved by uninstalling and reinstalling.

My solution was to set the startup type for the service to manual and stop the program auto-starting every time the system was booted.
