Nope.. none at all.. one error msg when booting up.. something with a bluetooth program that tries to boot on startup.. BTTray: "ERROR: Unable to start the Bluetooth stack service". The laptop belongs to a wife of a friend.

EDIT: I take that back.. I can start "task manager".

EDIT 2:Poking around some more.. I'm seeing that if I try and start mbam.exe it does load into memory and is listed under "Processes" but not listed under "Applications"

I get a brief (Very brief) window showing than it's gone.. like its trying to load and gets denied.

Edit: only sometimes.. most of the time.. nothing happens.. mouse arrow turns into the lil circle like its trying to do something, than just stops and becomes an arrow again.

Hrmm..  I couldn't get things like mbam.exe, MS internet Explorer, Skype and the like to start.. But just tried some basic apps like Windows media player, Paint, Calculator and those are starting up.. weird...

not yet, didn't want to mess with that yet, I was sure it was some type of malware.. but now I'm not sure.

I'm stumped on whats going on with this laptop, it's acting really weird. Seems to be running very smooth.. boots up fast. loads certain things very quickly, (eg. Control Panel, basic OS games, browses the HD quickly) But has issues with other apps, such as internet explorer (doesn't load period). mbam.exe doesn't load from the desktop icon, but will load (although lags the system to the point the app "stops responding") when I right-click on a file and select Malwarebytes to scan it. I installed firefox. It loads but the window is blacked out for the most part but will show like the top-right "X" to close the window when I mouse-over it.

I was able to get HijackThis to launch.. during system scan, I got the following: "For some reason your system denied write access to the Host file. If any hijacked domains are in the file, hijackthis may Not be able to fix this. If that happens again, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click start, Run and type: Notepad C:\windows\System32\drivers\etc\host    and press Enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as 'Host' (with quotes), and reboot."

want me to post the log?

See if you can run this...

Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your Desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.
