typo, I meant no 'safe mode' in title.

I have the "your browser has been locked by the 'cyber unit of the government' "  virus.

Ive tried searching for fixes and haven't found one that will work.

safe mode wll not work, none of the safe mode options, computer just restarts.

the virus screen pops up before I can access the task manager.

I tried useing 'hitman pro' as described here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-your-computer-has-been-locked-ransomware

it will not run. . . .      I end up with a black screen.

I can log in as a guest (if that's any help)

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thank you,

Jim

I'll report this topic to appropriate helpers.

1. Please let us know what Windows version you have and if it's 32- or 64-bit.
2. Is the computer bootable in any mode?

Hold on there....

I believe 32. not positive. do I need to check?

I can only log in as "guest"

tried restore as admin. don't know default password.

didn't download anything, it happened when the computer started redirecting to multiple sites and wouldn't stop.

thanks for getting back to me so soon.

Hello Jim,

At this point what exactly is locked? Your browser or normal mode as well (the whole screen with no desktop)? If it is the browser only, could you give me the message, when you try to access the internet?

regards, Elise

Hello Jim,

the entire desk top gets covered by the "your browser has been locked" screen as soon as machine starts up.  I get about a 2 second view of the desktop screen before it gets covered.

I cant access the task manager, or start menu before the malware screen covers the entire desktop.

when I try to start in safe mode it shows about 3 seconds of the 'password' screen and windows shuts down and restarts.

I can log on as a "guest" on the infected machine.

if you need any more information let me know.

thanks,

Jim

Before continuing can you tell me what version of Window this is? You said its 32 bit, but you didn't say what version (XP, vista, 7, 8). :)

Do you have your XP CD to use?

yes, I have all the software that came with the machine (reinstallation CD recovery meda for. . .XP. . .service pack 3)

the machine is a Dell Mini wth no CD drive,  I do have an external CD drive I can use but, I believe the computer has to start up for it to access the external drive.

I did pick up a 8GB usb drive that currently has hitman pro on it, that can be used for anything.

should I try the kaspersky rescue cd?  ( thank you proffa for the input )

thanks

Jim

Since you mention you ended up with a black screen when trying to use Hitman Pro, can you actually boot from USB? If that works, then try the following:

Here's Kaspersky's official guide: http://support.kaspersky.com/us/8097

kaspersky is downloaded, moved to usb drive, and is currently scanning infected machine.

estimated time of completed scan is 11 hours.

I'll post again when finished with results.

Okay Jim, please save a copy of the scan results so we can review them (there might be more than only ransomware that requires extra steps).
