Posted 30 January 2014 - 03:44 PM

I had left my computer alone this morning.  Firefox was open to a blank tab but minimized.  When I came back, AVG Free 2014 was reporting a malware infection, claiming that TFC.exe was infected with a Trojan horse Dropper.Generic9.SLV.  I told it to fix the problem which sent the file to the virus vault.

Then I left the house for a while and when I came back, another notice had popped up, saying svchost.exe was infected with the same thing.  Here are the details on that second notice.

Trojan horse Dropper.Generic9.SLV

c:\System Volume Information\_restore{AED28984-2886-4F12-A886-B7CDBE4CC936}\RP227\A0036475.exe

Process name: C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe

I told it to isolate the problem, and it is once again in the virus vault.  Basically, I think I have a Trojan Horse Dropper, and I need help in getting rid of it/fixing it.  DDS log to follow, with Attach.txt added as an attachment, as per the Preparation Guide instructions.  Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide.

Hello starblazers

I would like to welcome you to the Malware Removal section of the forum.

Around here they call me Gringo and I will be glad to help you with your malware problems.

Very Important --> Please read this post completely, I have spent my time to put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier, faster and smoother for both of us!

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.
NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the "Follow This Topic" Button, make sure that the "Receive notification" box is checked and that it is set to "Instantly" - This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

These are the programs I would like you to run next, if you have any problems with one of these just skip it and move on to the next one.

-AdwCleaner-

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Scan.
  • After the scan is complete click on "Clean"
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
-Junkware-Removal-Tool-

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
When they are complete let me have the two reports and let me know how things are running.

Hi Gringo, thanks for the fast reply!

I haven't had any more alerts since I made my initial post even though I've had the computer on all day, performing various normal tasks I use it for.  I just finished running both of the programs you suggested.  The first one did not save a AdwCleaner[S1].txt file in the location you indicated, but the file did pop up after restart with the file name AdwCleaner[S0].txt, so I saved that to my desktop and proceeded to use JRT.  I plan on leaving my computer on overnight just to see if anything else pops up, but in the meantime, I am posting the results of those two scans for AdwCleaner and JRT.

Hello starblazers

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notepad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

Gringo,

I left my computer on all thoughout the night, and was gone most of the morning, but there were no threat detections from AVG and it seemed to be behaving itself.

Then I ran Combofix, after individually deactivating each component of AVG 2014 Free according to this guideline

http://www.avg.com/us-en/faq.num-5239

I did notice a couple of things, the computer didn't completely restart at any point.  I mean, the icons on the desktop went away and nothing but my wallpaper and the Combofix window remained, but it didn't restart (with Windows XP screen coming up and everything).  I don't know if that makes a difference, but felt I should mention it since you said it might need to reboot more than once.  The other thing is, when I started turning the AVG components back on, when I re-enabled the Email Scanner for Incoming Messages, AVG detected a threat at C:\COMBOFIX\CATCHME.TMP.  I assumed Combofix was done, since it had already generated the report and seemed to be completely inactive before I began to re-enable the AVG components.  Assuming it was a part of the process, I allowed AVG to make the CATCHME.TMP a safe exception.

Anyway, here are the results of the Combofix log:

Hello starblazers

At this time I would like you to run this script for me and it is a good time to check out the computer to see if there is anything else that needs to be addressed.

:Run CFScript:

Please start by opening Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

ClearJavaCache::

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
CFScriptB-4.gif
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
  • In your next post I need the following
    • report from Combofix
    • let me know of any problems you may have had
    • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Okay, I did the script and reran Combofix as requested.  Once again, the computer never fully restarted, but after making sure I had a copy of the new combofix log saved to my desktop, I restarted my computer just to be on the safe side.  There haven't been any threats detected via AVG Free all day today.  The computer seems to be running fine, but then apart from those two threat notices I mentioned in my initial post in the thread, it seemed to be running fine before all this happened too.  Combofix log as follows:

Hello starblazers

Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit

1.Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit
2.Unzip the contents to a folder in a convenient location.
3.Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
4.Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
5.Click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats and reboot if prompted to do so.
6.Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.
7.Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
8.If no additional threats were found, verify that your system is now running normally, making sure that the following items are functional:
  • •Internet access
    •Windows Update
    •Windows Firewall
9.If there are additional problems with your system, such as any of those listed above or other system issues, then run the 'fixdamage' tool included with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit and reboot.
10.Verify that your system is now functioning normally.

Ran Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit as requested.  Malwarebytes didn't find anything on its scan and even said no cleanup was necessary.

Could not run Roguekiller because the link for the 32-bit version you gave me leads to a Page Not Found result on the Adlice Software site.  I tried clicking on the "Software" Tab at the top of that page and selecting Roguekiller from the drop-down menu, which took me to this page:

http://www.adlice.com/softwares/roguekiller/

I found a link halfway down the page to the 32-bit version, the link location was:

http://www.adlice.com/softs/roguekiller/RogueKiller.exe

I downloaded this, and doubleclicked the icon on my desktop to start it, and seemed as if it were going to run the prescan, but after a few moments, it said created a popup stating that that version was outdated and asked if I wanted to download the updated version from the website.  I told it yes, and it took me back to the same page I downloaded it from in the first place.  There were big green download buttons, but they seemed to lead to non-Roguekiller-related software websites, such as bearshare.  Also, when I tried to run Roguekiller, it created a folder on my desktop named RK_Quarantine.  Inside this folder was one file, size 30 bytes, called RogueKiller, and according to the description in the details sidebar of the folder window, it says that it is Configuration Settings.  I assume this is normal for the program?

Anyway, apart from the inability to run Roguekiller because it doesn't seem to be up to date, my computer seems to be working and AVG Free has not detected any further threats.  Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit results as follows:

Sorry for doubleposting, but a new problem has arisen.  I was just playing quizzes on the Sporcle website, and Firefox suddenly opened a new tab.  It did this about three different times.  It took me to pages on these websites (changed the actual . into dots, but you get the idea):

getsoftfreedotcom

sethdotavazutrackingdotnet

russiandatingbeautiesdotcom

This is the first bizarre behavior that has occurred since my first post in the thread, and wanted to keep you informed of the change in the computer's behavior.

I reset Firefox and it seemed to be doing okay this morning, but just now as I was browsing another forum I frequent, two additional tabs opened up for no reason and took me to the following website

Hello starblazers

Lets get a deeper look into the system and lets see if something shows up.

Download and run OTL

Download OTL by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
  • Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected.
  • Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
  • Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened and the that I need posted back here
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized - save this one on your desktop in case I ask for it later
  • Please post the contents of OTL.txt in your next reply.

Hello starblazers,

I would like you to run this custom script for me now and when it is complete please give me the report and a status update for the computer.

Run OTL Script
  • Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
  • Copy and Paste the following code into the customFix.png text box.
    :OTL
    FF - user.js - File not found
FF - HKLM\Software\MozillaPlugins\@Apple.com/iTunes,version=: File not found
    O4 - HKU\.DEFAULT..\RunOnce: [nltide_2] regsvr32 /s /n /i:U shell32 File not found
    O4 - HKU\S-1-5-18..\RunOnce: [nltide_2] regsvr32 /s /n /i:U shell32 File not found
    O16 - DPF: {7530BFB8-7293-4D34-9923-61A11451AFC5} http://download.eset.com/special/eos/OnlineScanner.cab (Reg Error: Key error.)

    :Files
    ipconfig /flushdns /c

    :Commands
    [PURITY]
    [emptyjava]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top.
  • Click btnOK.png.
  • OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.Copy and Paste that report in your next reply.

Note** if the report does not popup after the computer reboots you can find it here in this folder - C:\_OTL\MovedFiles

It will be named - mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log

Where mmddyyyy_hhmmss - are numbers representing the date and time the fix was run.
