If elected by the students, he would join the ranks of notables such as Mordechai Vanunu and Winnie Mandela and would be able to travel freely to Scotland, apparently without fear of arrest, rendition, etc.

He would get three years in the UK, chairing the University Court, probably a nice change from his present surroundings.

Former candidates included (inter alia) Yasser Arafat, actors, a comedian and a convicted bank robber.

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing that. I had not been aware Snowden was nominated for such a position.

Two Norwegian politicians have jointly nominated Edward Snowden for the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize.
Socialist Left party politicians Baard Vegar Solhjell, a former environment minister, and Snorre Valen said the public debate and policy changes in the wake of Snowden's whistleblowing had "contributed to a more stable and peaceful world order".

I read about that too from CNN, Washington Times, and here on Bloomberg. Very interesting indeed. Two different things, Rector at Glasgow and Nominee for Nobel Peace Prize.

Thanks for your interest.  I thought it was a strange choice for both.

Intelligence whistleblower Edward Snowden HAS been elected to the post of student Rector at Glasgow University.

Quotes from supporter Ms Lubna Nowak:

" I think we've shown that we oppose mass surveillance and intrusion to our private lives and that also we stand in solidarity - that we believe whistleblowers should be honoured and they're heroes rather than traitors."

" the vote followed in a "proud tradition" of selecting Mrs Mandela and Mr Vanunu."

(Mrs Mandela has never been squeaky clean and Mr Vanunu is the Israeli whistleblower, for anyone who doesn't know.)

I suppose everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Interesting development, but University nominations for internal posts and the granting of complimentary degrees etc. are a sick joke and always have been. The comments made by the other posters confirm that.

These students pick the most obnoxious characters on Planet Earth to nominate for their "honours". I have no doubt that Idi Amin Dada, Saddam Hussein, Pol Pot, Osama Bin Laden, Ted Bundy, Edward Gein and a whole lot of other vile despots were nominated or received honours by some crappy University in the past.
