Yesterday, I got the Startup virus (all my browsers start up on startup.com when I reboot my computer).

I followed the guide.  Ran ADWcleaner, JRT.  Ran antimalwarebytes several times.  It's still there.

I've been able to figure out the following:  there are two startup items that shouldn't be there.  video.exe in ...appdata/roaming  and frank.exe (my name) in ...appdata/microsoft/windows.  I can't find or delete these files, though.  When I disable them in startup, it seems to be fine.

How do I get rid of these files and/or make sure this crap isn't in my computer anymore?

Thanks.

Hello blackflag.

Did they find and remove things?

Would you also run these.

Download TDSSKiller and save it to your desktop.
  • Extract (unzip) its contents to your desktop.
  • Open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory (usually C:\ folder) in the form of TDSSKiller_xxxx_log.txt. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • .
    .
  • Last run ESET.
  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the esetonlinebtn.png button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
  • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the esetsmartinstaller_enu.png icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
  • Scan potentially unwanted applications
  • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
  • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.
  • NOTE:Sometimes if ESET finds no infections it will not create a log.

  • >>>>>>

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
    Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

malwarebytes found problems and removed them.  But when I ran subsequent times, it kept trying to remove video.exe over and over.

Ran TDSSkiller - no problems.  Report:

And it's still doing it.  Just rebooted, and all my browsers start on StartPage.com  This is driving me mental.

Hello again.. Here's the situation.. You have a back door infection.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan. This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files. I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation. Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information: How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

Ok, first let me just say that in response to "You have a back door infection." that I doubt that, since I've never experimented that way, sexually.  Not that there's anything wrong with that.

And now that the jokes are done -- I appreciate the information.  I'm going to just wipe everything, reinstall everything, and start over.  Giant pain the ass.

Once I do that - do you recommend AVG or Kaspersky for anti-virus?

Thanks again.

:hysterical:

Kaspersky and ESET are the best.

That would be the choice I made.

If you have any questions about reformatting... ask in WIN 8 up top.

remember to update adobe reader and java.

Thanks for visiting.!
